944 electrical faults

LM Racing

Hi all

I have an electrical fault which I must admit is beating me. My 1987 944 developed an intermittent fault which is seeming becoming permanent. whilst the car runs fine, the following have stopped working;

electric windows
windscreen wipers
fan / blower
rear heated screen.

I have been through the obvious fuse checks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It could be as simple as a tarnished fuse, which is something I would not rule out.

Earths is also a good shout :).

Do the indicators and headlights still work? I'm guessing yes otherwise you would have said. The ignition switch on mine ( now Hallsey's ! ) if not turned back very slightly on starting would run fine but a lot of the ancillary electrics wouldn't work, including the ones you mentioned. Must admit the thought of changing the switch was daunting and I just got use to turning it back slightly.

I have had a similar issue with an ignition key on a VW Golf years ago. I have tried moving the key, alas with no success. I will keep searching. Thanks for the responses.

ORIGINAL: 944 man

The ignition switch as described isnt a rare failure on either series.

My 944S (as Norm said) seems to suffer from either a weak return spring or slightly stiff internals, although it just need a gentle nudge to ease it back from the starter position. It's still a lot more positive than the lower miled 2.7 I looked at, with that one I had no idea which switch point the key was at!!

Incidentally, does anyone know whether the sprung part of the ignition switch/barrel is a feature of the barrel or the switch mechanism? If it's just the switch then I'd consider replacing it (in my case), but if it's the barrel - I'll live with it!!

The spring is in the switch in the series one (like a Mk1 Golf, but more contacts) and the series two (probably a 928 switch).
