944 Defector!!

Ex Skyline

New member
Hi everyone, this is my first post on this section having just defected from the 944 forum [:D]. I sold my 944 Turbo last September
having spent a small fortune on it and, although it was a mental car to drive, it just didn't quite "do it" for me. Back to the present
day, I have always loved the 911 964 C2 and, I may have found one on e-bay. It's even in my favourite colour (Black) [8D]!
I really miss being "Porscheless" and, want to get started again. The problem is this. I know practically nothing about this marque,
and, at 33k, it's a big investment. I am a dinosaur when it comes to computers and, don't even know how to post a link [8|]!!
Would any of you guys be kind enough to have a squint on e-bay and, let me know what you think? It's done 117,000 miles and,
lives in Gosport. I have spoken with the owner who, appears to be a decent chap. However, due to my work commitments, I am
unable to view until next weekend (if it hasn't sold by then). It has been for sale for about six weeks. I don't know what to make
of that [8|]?
Thank you in advance guys, all advice gratefully received [:D].

Kind regards.

Pete' (Ex Skyline).

Yes Paul! That's the one! Thank you [:)]. All I need now is a few honest opinions. I just need a few "in the know" 964 enthusiasts
to have a butchers on my behalf and, let me know what they think [:)]. Many thanks.

Pete'.

Interesting find Pete. For a nice c2 manual coupe it is probably pretty well priced (in current inflated market if its nice) I just can't tell from the pics if it is a nice one or not. Engine bay looks grubby, doesn't seem to have any windscreen wipers so initial cosmetic impressions aren't great but then car seems to have had a few big ticket items done but the body work sounds if it was done very poorly and needs rectification. My only concern is if you paid £33k for this and it needs £5-10k worth of work to get it up to scratch when a really nice one should be attainable for £35-40k in the current market. Gut feel it looks about £5k overpriced in current state just by looking at the photos (at this price if it was good it would have been bought by now I reckon)

This one looks nicer on the face of it ....but is c4 and in a marmite colour combo for some (I quite like it though)

This c2 through 911 uk is also worth a look at £31.5k

I would also drop Steve Brooke's (Boxsey) a PM (either 964 register secretary or co secretary) on here and get in touch for a chat. He is very knowledgable on the 964 and could be able to poin you in the direction of a nice car if he is aware of any for sale.

I would also check the rennlist 964 forum for more info on 964s as a lot of uk based guys post there. There is a thread called http://rennlist.com/forums/964-forum/678388-great-uk-964s-fs-which-one-would-you-take-home.html which links to most (if not all) 964s in uk for sale with some comments etc

Asking prices for nice manual c2 coupes seem all over the place with many being advertised around the £35-42k range.

Definitely get a ppi done. A lot of cars are selling through word of mouth / contacts so its worth speaking to people like Steve who can help you source a nice car

Thank you for your advice Andrew, very informative indeed. It seems it's "drama over" at this present time though as the Black
one on flea bay at 33k is, as of this afternoon, not there any more [8|]! Probably sold, just my luck!! Perhaps I may ask another
question Andrew/anyone? Is it at all possible to turn a targa into a coupe? And, is it possible to get rid of those horrid after market
rear spoilers and, go back to one of those speed assisted jobbies? Please excuse my ignorance but, there is another Black one on
e-bay for 21k. I don't mind a bit of a project in my old age, just not a "ground up" re-build [8|][;)][:D]!!
Perhaps you would be kind enough to have a look at that one for me? Many thanks.

David Bladon is our register secretary.

TBH I'm as confused as anyone else about 964 prices since they (and the rest of the air cooled prices) started shooting up over the last 18 months. Everyone seems to think their cars are now worth 30 to 40K. I suspect that on close inspection there could be a huge variation in what you get for your money. With this in mind I don't think I could recommend one car over the other unless I already knew the car and owner well.

Personally, I'm glad I bought mine when nobody wanted one and prices were at rock bottom which means I still use it as intended and don't think about what it might be worth now.

TBH Pete a cursory once over is not enough with these cars. As Steve has intimated the quality of individual cars varies hugely, the only way to tell what you may be buying is to get a specialist PPI. Talking to an owner who knows the cars and who can explain what has been done and what has not been done is a good start but a PPI should tell you what future costs can be expected if any.

Me & you both Steve, I have no idea what mine is worth now! [8|]

I am also a 944 'defector' although mine was an S2. The 944 (S2 & Turbo) were slightly left field choices at the time, so inevitably I was drawn to the 964 as at the time it too was the unloved "911", although all that has changed now. [:D]

You really need to go and look at as many as you can before making a buying decision, also, take a look at the buyers guide pinned to the top of this sub-forum. It is a bit neglected these days, but when we put it together it was a very useful resource.

Good luck & don't rush into anything!

Thank you for your sound advice Colin [:)]. So, IS it possible to turn a Targa into a coupe and, to replace the horrific after market
rear spoiler for an original speed assisted item (after all, its not a GT2 so why would I want it to look like one [8|])?? If so, I might
just go to Bedford on Saturday, to have a look at a Black Targa at 21k [;)][:D]

Yeah, that's what I thought [8|]. I'll have to forget about the one in Bedford at 21 grand. Never mind. Apparently, the one I liked
that lives in Gosport IS indeed still for sale (the Black one on e-bay). I am going to try to get down to see it this weekend, it's only
60 miles away. Thanks for the replies chaps [:)].
