944 & 924 Odometer fix

924/944 odometer gear is well known to fail at some point. Repairing it is a simple procedure and parts are (?) easily available.

In my case i had friend's 931 gauge to fix up.

Starting point:

First you must remove the black bezel. Use set of screwdrivers to bend the bezel off. Start with the small one

to get it like this

and continue with bigger screwdriver to be able to bend a little bit more

Now you can lift the bezel off

Remove the two screws in the back

And lift speedometer internal parts off

The broken gear is the yellowish one. See a small hairline crak. Lift this gear off carefully.

Gear manufacturer says mile meter should have 17 teeth. According to them KM meter should have 11 teeth. This 931 odometer had 15 teeth, so i didn't have a correct new part to install. Most likely we have to have a special order gear. Because of that old gear was glued and installed back. Hopefully a correct part can be installed soon.

Put internal parts back

And fasten two screws

Put bezel with glass back to it's place

Next time i will do the same procedure to S2/951/968 odometer, have two broken ones to be repaird.

my mate has a 924s ,and his 924s over reads by about 10-15 mph and the odometer doesnt work it logs about 200 miles a year instead of the 4-5k he does
so I will show him this thanks

Paul I'm sure I wrote a text version of how to for Porche Post many years ago or posted something in the 924 forum, but new members would not have the benefit of that knowledge, and in any case I only covered the actual repair of the gear; there is a further refinement to the job so only award yourself with a beer if you bought two four mm nut-serts (like a threaded pop rivet) and cut off the usefull part i.e. the tubular "crush section" and pushed it over the cracked spigot. This part of the nutsert is a particularly good fit on the tiny spigot, so that with a little loctite the original fit of the gear is restored and you dont have to rely on the grip of the adhesive to turn the gear on the shaft. Furthermore the steel section reinforces the gear spigot so that it cant crack again somewhere else. Now where did I put that bottle of home brew!

I guess that this procedure should not be massively different for the chaps owning 928s? A friend of mine has a working speedo but a broken odometer?

Bar the USA, is there a local supplier who can supply the gears?

A great write up I must say.

928 is quite similar to new style 944/968 speedometer. Will add that late style odometer procedure when i got necessary parts. Have two 951 odometers to be fixed
