Due to illness my father hasn't been able to sort out the 924, so she has come home

Its looking rather sorry for itself and will need alot of time and TLC to get it back in road worthy condidtion but i have time and everyone needs a hobby[:)]
 
Hi Paul good to hear from you, and thanks hopfully my dad will be back on his feet soon. And Yes John she is an "S", but i have been toying with idea of putting a GT body kit on it, as I have to do quite a bit of work to put her right.

And so it begins, both the engine and body work need attension, as the engine just stopped when my father was driving home from work one night, the "AA" told him that it was the timing belt, but after stripping it back today the timming belt is fine, although I now need a new rotor arm as it shattered when i tried to get it off the car [8|]. And then to add insult to injury the heavens open up, so had to pack away until tommorrow.
 
After removing (breaking up in my hands) the rotor arm from the distrubutor there is a copper cap attached to the cam shaft, does this need to be removed as well, is it part of the rotor arm? I have removed the grub screw but is just will not shift ! should I heat it to loosen ? PS has anyone attempted to convert their 924 into a Carerra GT, due to rot on the front wings it would be better to replace than repair, but i thought i might just go and add the gt front and rear wings.
 
Well, ph sportscars in shardlow have wings for £75 or therabouts, so I would repair rather than convert. A rep is always going to be a bit "spot the difference" and from your posts in the past, it doesn't take *that much* to get it in tip-top shape I reckon? I hope your father is on the mend as well. Thanks for the advise bert (it was a moment of madness). Managed to get the brass ring off the cam shaft, but i guess im quite unluck as all it seams to to in the midlands at the mo is rain rain rain.
 
Hi Marc. According to one independent, the recognised method to get the rotor arm off the shaft is to shatter it. I wish he had told me that before I replaced the arm and shaft for £74. I don't seem to remember a copper cap, but then my 944 is a 1992 8 valve turbo, so there could be differences. I do remember the shaft came off quite easily though.
 
Removed the front wing and put the engine back together today

Managed to buy a second hand wing off ebay, but it will need repainting and a whole cutting for the indicator to be put in, just waiting now for the battery to charge, fingers crossed ive sorted the engine if not back to sqaure one.
 
The engine turns but no fire, it doesnt sound quite right either. could the timing belt slipped? all the teeth are in place and the rollers are tight, petrol is getting to the engine i havent checked the coil yet but will do so when i can. Do you have any ideas ? Before I start a complete engine tear down? Thanks
 
Crank reference sensors would be 1st guess (or their wiring), may only need wiggling! Does the tacho needle bounce as its turning over?

+1 for a little wiggle! this one slightly frustrates me as I was recently given some switch/contact cleaner ,so split both plugs/sockets ,which were clean as a whistle ,having previously twisted the male half pins to improve the fit/grip in the female socket (a solution I thought) plus added petroleum grease + WD 40, cleaned again .liberally sprayed witjh the contact cleaner,refitted both,ensured tight & fully "clicked"in position & bingo!- used the car for 4/5 days instead of the BMW whilst I had a coolant plastic inlet replaced under the inlet manifold without one instance of "no tach flicker"-then last day,drove to the factory OK, went to go somewhere 3 hrs later & no flicker Quick wiggle & ensured "click" from both connectors & OK again, Does anyone know whether this is just good fortune,or are the sensor gaps in need of adjustment/dirty perhaps & a high resistance builds up which is temporarly cured by the "wiggle"?

Mike ,I agree-but it would be good to remove this irritating foible although since the wiggle always works(so far) one wouldn't want to go to great expense unnecessarily.
 
thanks for all the advise, im willing to try anything !, im even toying with the idea of buying a complete second hand engine to strip and rebuild this one if its terminal. (I heard a rather loud crack the last time i tried to turn the engine over, so I decided to run and hide for a bit [8|]). I have also receaved my new (old) wing, nice two tone green a little rust on the bottom edge but for the price i payed a steal really, so another weekend job cleaning straightening, repairing and painting [:D] well it keeps me off call of duty.
 
decided to take advantage of the nice weather today and cut out the rot from the sill, I didnt really notice my wonky cutting until I looked at the picture [;)]

Well managed to get a new (old) wing off ebay, and have started preping it ready for attachement.

Will start the strip down of the engine tommorrow , hopefully the rain will hold off. Im hoping there isn't to much damage to the engine from the slipped timing belt:(
 
Spent some time on the body work today, fitted the new front wing.

took quite abit of time ensuring a good fit, good panel gaps and such, will need to drill out the indicator fitment next, then lots of wet and drying to get a surface ready for paint. Also, got the rot out of the other wing, and primmed, will let sit for a while now to see if anything else wants to pop up.

I'm quite ashamed of myself, I have done nothing to my little 924s, and what's worse is my wife hit it as she was reversing off the drive and smashed the wing in :( The engine is now in bits and tin worm has eaten the front drivers side right through the floor. Compared to how she was she is only fit for the scrap yard at the moment. I guess it would be easier to replace the engine rather than keep stripping it down trying to find the fault, which is more than likely me !

As well as getting 'Pearl' back on her feet (Wheels) I have also brought a 924 which I'm still not fully sure why I brought it, just fell in love with it

The interior was ripped out so have started to replace it.

In the next few days I will start to weld up Pearl and look for new engines. Its a dirty job- but I love it:)
