911st in this months 911&PW

Just picked up a copy of this months 911&PW magazine and there is an interesting article on the conversion of a 911T to a 911ST replica. The article didn't cover the car itself too much (pity), but it did make some fair points concerning the preservation of original classics and the conversions of those cars that have lost their originality, ie. have had a colour change, not matching numbers, etc.

All of this got me thinking. My car has had modifications carried out to it (most before I purchased it) and can never ever be returned to original in the strictest sense. Therefore I am toying with the idea of transforming my T into something else. Can anybody point me in the right direction for websites/books that reference the 911 models that weren't in production for the public market (ie. not T, E, S, RS)? I've come across the ST, the R and the T/R but have no idea what these models actually are.

There are a couple of interesting books - but they're not cheap unfortunately.

'Excellence was expected' is a complete and detailed history of Porsche and very accurate - but not cheap and definitely not an easy read.

'From R to GT3R' (or the earlier edition, 'From R to RSR') also chronicles the early race cars and gives chassis by chassis history - a John Starkey classic but becoming very expensive when they do appear on eBay.

What year is your 'T'? I presume she's a LWB?

Thanks Phil for the book information. I'll have to keep a look out for these. As for your question, mine is a '69 LWB T which prior to my ownership was retro fitted with a 2.4 engine and gearbox (from a '72 T). And with evidence of several different colour changes over the years, there's little originality left so hence my enquiry into creating a replica. There's no point me doing an RS as I need to replace the engine with a 2.7 and the engine I have is good plus my budget doesn't cover this idea. So I'm looking at replicas of cars that were themselves 2.4.

I to enjoyed the article, but would have liked more information on the actual build up of the car. There was also a good article on 'RSR Road Racers' featuring amongst others an ST in the September edition.

I to have a car with little or no history and a colour change from Sepia Brown to White, although mine is an original 1973 2.4, albeit with a more recent (1976 3.0 Carrera ?) gearbox fitted.

I am currently refurbishing (perhaps a rather grans title for minor renovation) the interior, and plan on removing, refurbishing and improving the suspension and brakes next winter.

Like your car, mine will never be original, so why not enjoy making it in to something you want - look over on DDK where lighweight_911 has a nice 911R replica, and I believe Paul Howells has an original ST.
