901 'box OK when cold, crunches when hot ...

Selecting first or reverse is fine when car has not been running for long, but after it is warmed up for 1/2 hr or so the gear change into Ist or reverse crunches unless youre very very gentle with it.

I have new rubber transmission nose mounts, but have not changed the engine mounts at the back. Thought perhaps its the mounts getting warm and moving about in their old age once the engine warms up. Any ideas guys? Also, I have not changed the trans oil since buying the car a year ago, but I guess this would be worth doing anyway.

Cheers...

Mine crunched into first too... no amount of oil changine sorted it, the 901 box has a weak 1st syncro. Had to have it rebuilt to cure it £££.

My throwout bearing was also shot and this often shows same symptoms, and it may be eating away at the pressure plate fingers too. Also not good, but cheaper.

Hows your cluth play?

Yes the clutch play is also an issue - I think its about right, but my wood pedalboard was discintegrating and so the clutch pedal didnt have anything solid to limit the travel. Have nearly finished fabricating a new pedalboard so this will make things easier to adjust properly. Over travel on the clutch is supposed to be bad for these cars I hear!

Yep i suspected the synchro too but its wierd it only does it after a good run...

When my release bearing was going it showed the same symptoms, fine when cold - awful when hot, can't say for sure if thats what you have got Gav. Engine out job though.

Yep its about time I had the engine out for a bit of a tinkering, so I'll give the clutch release bearing a close look. You can just about hear the bearing faintly when the clutch is dipped, so I think it could be a little worn...
