20 inch wheels downsides

I am about to buy a second set of wheels for my 997TT and as Porsche cant be bothered to offer me a choice I am considering going the whole hog and getting a set of 20 inch TechArt Formulae wheels. (20*12 and 20*8.5)

I would be interested to hear what members of the Forum think the downsides are of such a choice other than cost of course. I am interetsed in views on handling, ride quality, weight etc.

I know appearance is a personal choice but I think these look good and will give the C2S X51 guys something to admire as I pass (sorry David Y couldnt resist that )

bob,

Be sure to have the suspension lowered at the same time too so we can be even more impressed wi da flexed up turbo man. [:)]

Looks like the only downside then is that I might be mistaken for an urban distributor of sexual services and pharmaceutical products

Bob, if you're conscious of you're weight with the new wheels, I read in a back issue of 911&PW I think that JZ Machtech are doing BBS magnesium wheels for 997 which are the lightest available. Had a quicklook at their webiste but didn't see anything about them though. With the PCCB's be a shame to put back any more unsprung weight.

However, the wheels I really like are the new BBS racing as used on the 997 cup cars, you can get them from these guys, and they're now in 20" too:

Thanks Rob. Good point about the unsprung weight. Parr also offer these BBS wheels. I hear the Mantheys are good but VERY expensive.
The other problem I have is that the TURBO has TPM and I cant yet figure out how to switch it off. If you use a set of wheels without the TPM sensors then the alarm goes off all the time or so I am told. Any one know how to switch off the TPM facility?

Hi,

I would also think on the effect on the Warranty - I'm sure there was someone on this forum who was having a huge problem with getting something fixed under warranty on a Cayenne with oversized wheels, and the OPC would not touch it, even though the problem was non wheel / chassis related. In the end he put the original wheels back on and took it to another dealer.

I've done a search, but cannot find the particular thread - it may have been over a year ago, but I would check with your supplying dealer on the likely effect, and get something in writing if they are happy with the installation - you will probably find that the warranty on suspension / brake items would be affected as a minimum

Cheers

Pete

Hi
Bit late on the reply, and it may be obvious, but have you checked with your insurance company? I have had several in the past that will not touch the car unless it was absolutely standard with Porsche parts factory fitted. One would not even allow a dealer fitted Porsche aerokit.[]
