2.7 MFI Spec Engines

Hi I am new to all this, call me ignorant and old but I didnt know these talk boards existed!!!

Anyway after reading all your posts new and old you all seem very well schooled on 911's. This will probably be a no brainer for most.

I have a 2.2S and 2.4S engines in storage both original but I would like to build a 2.7 spec unit. Do you know what parts I can use, if any, from the units I have to build a 2.7 unit.

Any help will be appreciated.

Simon

The 2.4S MFI motor is basically the same as the 2.7 RS MFI motor,

In very basic terms you need to fit the 2.7 barrels & pistons and recalibrate the MFI fuel pump. Everything else including the cam etc is the same as the 2.4S

Have a look on these boards : do a search & you will find quite a few threads

yep relatively easy rebuild using a 2.4S core, just berrels, pistons and new spacecam in the MFI. seems a shame to modify a 2.4S engine, they're rather good to start with.

You can convert the 2.2, but you'll need a new crankshaft, rods, barrells and pistons as the 2.2 has a shorter stroke, plus all the MFI, so it would be rather costly

Wow I ended up reading for about 2 hours last night, there really is a lot of info....amazing.

Thanks for the help. I think I will still like to convert to 2.7. I will keep all the original bits though so I can change it back if need be. Does anyone know where is the best place to find 2.7 barrels and pistons? and the space cam for the MFI? Do they make new units anymore or is it all a case of finding NOS?

Many Thanks

Just for information - once converted to 2.7 RS spec you won't be able to change your engine back to its original 2.4 configuration at a later date since the conversion to 2.7 requires the spigots in the crankcase to be bored out to accept the larger diameter 90mm cylinders.

Thanks for all the info guys. Yes i did realise that after I wrote it, but im having second thoughts as barrels and pistons alone are £2500ish + vat plus everything else I would need. Probably about £5000-£6000 with labour.

If I took £6000 + what the engine is worth, I could probably buy a nice unit already done??

What car are you thinking of putting the motor into? Is it a '72 / '73 car?

Is a period correct modified engine important. If not you have loads of options all the way upto 993 motors that could be thrown in the back [;)][:D]

Of course an original 2.4S motor with MFI is quite desirable anyway & you would deffo be able to sell it to fund another motor

I didnt mean I wanted to spend that much but it was just hypothetical.

Car is a 1974 Coupe, converted to 74 3.0 RS body with RSR rear wing. Gulf Blue (I could have done with the info in the gulf blue paint thread a few months ago!!!)

I was thinking about a 3.2? How much do they go for?

And any ideas of what a 2.4S unit is worth?

Simon

Do you have a 2.4S engine or are you trying to buy one on ebay?

I see you bid on one recently but failed to win it.

Nigel

I bid as everything has a price and I would have put it in storage like the other 2, or used it for spares.
what do good original 2.4S go for? I saw a nice 2.4S RHD up for £35,000 I think it was. Hence a 2.4S engine has a value and is definitly worth buying, especially as it has many parts as used in the 2.7rs/2.7carrera spec engine and they are fast becoming rare, everything is at a price of course...

Simon

You are a brave man bidding £2900 for it when you dont appear
to know what its worth.

I wish I had money to burn like that.

Good luck anyway.

2.4S engine would be worth considerably more than a 3.0 or a 3.2. I would sell it and put one of the larger engines in, especially if you've already got RSR body work.

I don't honestly know the value of a 2.4S but judging by the general desirability of the 2.4S engine for its cams and MFI I'd have thought a running example with no leaks and good compression would be north of 3.5k (especially if you can get the American's interested!)

Value, well, £2,500 + VAT for 2.4S pistons and barrels alone at OPC + many valuable 2.7rs parts that you cant get new anymore, you do the math as to value.......

Personally I agree with your comments
