1991 944T chipped?

Hi all,
Due to mine cutting out on high boost two years ago, Alasdair very kindly lent me a pair of ECUs which the mechanic fitted and whilst it didn't resolve the issue, he and Alasdair did confirm that these were non-standard, Alasdair by saying they were chipped and the mechanic by the increase in performance. Between times, I was ill for a while and lost interest but now keen to drive the car again, having read the recent topic on boost cut out and the welcome advice contained, found that the airbox? had indeed split and a new one is on order.
Meanwhile, having bought the ECUs, I decided that it would be good to store my original untouched ECUs and get the guy to re-fit the chipped ones whilst he fits the new air box. Before doing so, I'd like to see whose chips they are and find out if they are of dubious origin or ones from one of the well known tuners. I've gently sprung open the tabs but have failed to see how to separate and "hinge" open via the ribbon, the two halves of the upper and lower circuit boards. I think I'm being dense and missing the obvious so would someone be kind enough to describe in very simple terms how to open them so I can see the chips and take any indentifying details off them?
I'm not even sure whether both ECUs each have a chip that is swappable by simply unplugging! I'm not going to extract or touch them, just try to find out whose they are and what to expect in the way of performance increase.
The larger ECU is Bosch 0 261 200 088 Made in Germany 951.618.121.09 TYP 951 MW-02 and the smaller with the tube connection is Bosch 0 227 400 145 Made in Germany 951.618.113.09 TYP KRW-02

there is nothing stupid in your question, very sensible to find out exactly what you have there.

I hesitate to try and help as its so long since i changed the chips myself, the grey matter cannot recall from the archives.....[8|]

I think there are 3 white pins with a clip action on one edge which need to be gently compressed and the pcb lifted clear in a hinge motion.

It is a gentle operation, there is no levering or significant pressure required.

You are probably aware, but an unknown ECU program is very dangerous. There are components such as injectors, fuel pressure regulator, boost levels, and other components which MUST be matched. If you are in doubt, I would go back to the known standard components.

Thank you George. With a bit more confidence the method I found is to gently pry the collar located part way up on each of the vertical plastic spacers so that they come apart by 6 mm or so and then pull the upper circuit board away from the loom plug side whilst at the same time pressing on the two plastic catches that fit into notches in the circuit board.

On the larger ECU Bosch 0 261 200 088 Made in Germany 951.618.121.09 TYP 951 MW-02 is a 28 pin chip with MBM 2764-25 8535 151 AB and a piece of white sticky paper over the centre that I've left in place pending any feedback.

The smaller with the tube connection is Bosch 0 227 400 145 Made in Germany 951.618.113.09 TYP KRW-02 has a 24 pin with SGS M2732A 2F1 88531 and again a piece of white sticky paper. The SGS may be SBS as it is difficult to read.

Do any of these numbers mean anything to anyone please?

The 28 pin ECU is the DME and the second 24 pin ECU is the KLR. The DME controls fuel and ignition and is similar to the DME found on a normally aspirated car. The KLR deals with boost control.

If the car from which they were sourced had replacement EEPROMs fitted (chipped in the popular vernacular) then they will both have been opened and the new IC will have been fitted into a socket on the systemboard (of each).
 
Thank you for the link. Very useful. I've tried a search on the chip numbers but no luck as all the proprietory ones appear to have their own brand name on them. I'm not going to risk reusing these but mindful to see what a branded chip change and dual port wastegate package offers.

Tony - excellent link.....brought back memories.

I ran a Promax L2 Kit on a 944t (not the current one) some years back, and its a great set-up. I fitted a Boost gauge as it allows accurate boost setting.

However, some-one will finish this post for me if I don't add.....and replaced the head gasket 6 months later[:D]

(the rotten old gasket will not withstand the added loads for long due to corrosion and design)
