Accidentally used my steering lock key to open my driver's door and it worked. I'm not sure how long this has been the case, could be years. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this issue.

You'll probably find that all you need to open a 944 door is a flat piece of steel, something like a small screwdriver, a well known fault due to tumbler wear...🙂

Thank you for your reply. I bet its been like that for years then. Blimey I travelled abroad with loads of stuff in the boot and never realised it could all have been stolen.

I found out perhaps 20 years ago when I locked myself out of the car at an event. Tony Foote of this parish showed me how easy it is to get into these cars...I was actually happy for this info if not a little surprised/concerned...🙂

I had to fix the drivers door lock on my 90 944 last week. It had completely seized up with all the brass tangs protruding so the barrel wouldn't turn.

Its surprisingly easy to remove the complete door handle from the door without needing to remove the door card. its just a single phillips screw on the frame of the door.

Once the handle is out of the door there is a single phillips screw holding the lock cylinder in the handle. Takes an hour or so to strip ,clean and reassemble with a little thin oil and refit the handle to the door.

Thank you, I'll check it out.
you're welcome !.. It is a bit fiddly and tricky but very doable for the average owner.
It is literally 2x screws to completely remove the handle and the lock cylinder from the handle .
If I get the time I'll do a short video of the whole procedure and post it .
