1975 2.7 Targa engine number

Hi , I need some help with the location of the engine number on my 75 2.7 , Its not buy the fan where you would expect it to be , it does not look like it has been tampered with , which was my first fear !

I have read that it may have have a new engine from Porsche at some point in its 39 years and the new engines would not have had and engine number .

Its it else where ??

Can anyone help ?
 
The engine number should be where you describe, if there is no number the crankcase will have been replaced with an unstamped one.
