Was reading one of the forums (Wheels & Tryres) at Posrche Club America on the above subject.

There appears to be a lot of 996 owners who have bought cars with 18" already fitted that don't like the ride, noise, etc.

The advice was that 18" were good for tracking the car but other than cosmetic gave no real benefit over the 17" for normal everyday use.

My C4 came with 18" and I personally I would not have chosen them either, seems to be an obsession for fitting larger wheels.. 19" next !!, what is the real benefit and would it be detremental fit a standard 17 "

Surely the engineers at PORSCHE optimsed the car with 17" wheels in the first place.

Its a fascinating issue.

The E46 BMW M3 is widely regarded as a better handling and more comfortable road car on 18" rather than 19" wheels. The fastest Caterhams (SLRs/R500s) always handle better on 13" wheels, although some Seven owners go for wheels up to 16" for cosmetic purposes.

The 996 definitely looks better on 18" wheels, but the right tyre choice (P.Zero Rosso N4s?) and the standard suspension might be the best compromise for the UK's variable roads.
