Dear All,
To those I know, and to those I have yet to meet, a very good day! I am writing to you as an RO looking after areas in reasonable proximity in relation to the Air Tattoo at Fairford in July 2014 to give you an early warning of the event and the opportunities there will be to attend, and display your car if desired.
I know a number of you came this year (2013) as we had a very good response and attracted nearly 200 members over the weekend despite announcing it rather late in the year, and expecting people to arrive at 0630 ( which they did!)
2014 is the 50th Anniversary of the Red Arrows who will be a particular attraction of the event and who will be joined by several other aerobatic display teams. Fairford will be their pinnacle event of the year. Red will be an important colour!
There will be several important improvements to the arrangements and plans
The Car element of the show is to be expanded in a number of ways.
There will be a new Village for car clubs at the east ( and best) end of the runway next to the Pimms area where we were this year and at the closest position for the runway and general viewing. There will be an enhanced car display area "" this means that your members could come to enjoy the show and display their cars (on a single day or weekend basis ) in a unique Porsche area. There will be other car clubs also there. Those displaying cars will get enhanced VIP access rights to avoid traffic, a later arrival time than last year ( at 0730 "" or the night before as last year) access to the Village with hospitality and superb viewing positions. The cost is yet to be confirmed and will be higher than 2013 but still be great value and significantly better than the equivalent public prices.
Members who wish to come but who do not want to display their cars preferring to be more flexible in arrival and leaving times may also come and access the same Village area, whilst parking in a more general area. The hospitality and viewing will be the same as for the display contingent but the overall cost will be slightly higher although still very good value and better than the normal public offering. Their latest arrival time will be 10.00 and departure time is free.
2014 will be a three day event with a 4- hours display on the Friday which may prove to be as spectacular at the weekend days as the teams will be practicing their full manoeuvres.
You can see much of the detail of the show on the RIAT website which I don't need to repeat here. Suffice to say that this is the best flying display you will see anywhere in the world. Many people stay the weekend and need the two days to see the ground and aerial display.
I will have a lot more material to show you in the early new year but at this stage I wanted to get this information to you to consider building into your 2014 programme and to give me some early feedback on interest levels.
For those who came last year I should say that the administrative back up will be in place much earlier than in 2013 and the process for access should be much easier. For those who have not been before I should say that the airfield is a US air base and is subject to military administration and control. This and for other reasons restricts movement of cars in certain areas during flying display times and creates the need for heightened security procedures; this accounts for the early arrival requirement for display cars, and the checks on entry, which were this year carried out with good humour and good efficiency.
Lastly, there will be a small Classic car display for vehicles close to or even in the Village together with some aircraft, this is not yet completely specified but will probably include a display of 1964 sports cars.. ( last year of the 356 and first proper year of the 911) So if you have any thoughts in this area please let me know.
I shall be seeing the RIAT management regularly but am anxious to get the planning done early this year so if you have any observations or questions at this stage please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.
