Having noise issues with my Boxster with the Bridgestones on it.

I only tour in this car, runs to local spots to European road trips etc, about 5000 miles a year.

I do not need super grip track perfect tyres, just proper spec road tyres, low noise and A rated wet weather grip.

Any quality make except Bridgestones (the root of my problems).

Any thoughts on a simple Boxster tyre that works well for just normal use?

 
Just fitted Michelin Pilot Sport 4 on my 986S , much quieter than the aging Pirelli P Zero that were on it & less than 1/2 the price, but not N rated, but on a 24 year old car does it matter? So far every pleased, I had feathering issues with the Pirelli‘s!
 
My 2010 Boxster is on Michelin PS4 on 19 inch wheels and they are great all rounders. Similar use to OP. Touring and summer daily.

These tyres are £260 ea locally for the rears on my Boxster ( 265 x 35 x 19Y), the front about £200 ea.

'A' rated for the wet and 71dB noise level. Reads well.
 
I had Michelin P4s on my Cayman S Sport on 19" wheels good tyres no complaints.
In my experience of having Bridgestones on a 987 Boxster they tend to give a hard ride getting worse as they age.
Might be worth looking at a more comfort tyre such as Continentals

These Brigestones on the car at present really are 'run-flat' hard.

They do take the nasty crack shock over un-missed porthole...
Will have to replace the 4 tyres and take the hit or sell the car.

The Michelin MPS 4S is the popular choice for our cars, but I wouldn’t discount the Continental Conti Sport Contact 7 which has also received a positive press response despite reports that it wears quite quickly, and the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport is another option.

Looking on the Blackcircles website the Michelin is significantly more expensive than the Continental and Goodyear alternatives [there’s a cheaper MPS 4S tyre which seems to be a Mercedes fitment] . For the 19” rears the Michelin is £324 fitted, the Continental £272 and the Goodyear £268; so a significant saving for 4-tyres which buys you a lot of fuel for your touring expeditions!😀

I’m going to have to change the rather ancient P-Zeros on my 987.2 CS sooner rather than later and so will be very interested to hear what route you choose.

PS: Just to add, don’t discount the latest Pirelli P-Zero which reputably has been improved significantly over earlier versions, and slagged-off regularly by a regular contributor here … who shall remain nameless!😉 As a Club member you can claim up to £120 when you purchase two or more Pirelli tyres at a participating dealer.

Thanks for those details.
My price reference is First Stop in Wolverhampton who I have used many times over the last 40 years, they are cheaper than Kwik fit.

Just on sizes:

The front wheels are 19" x 8.5", currently with 235 x 35 x 19"Y
Rear wheels are 19" x 10", currently with 265 x 35 x 19" Y

The fronts are very low profile, is the 35 ratio correct??
 
Yes, the 35 ratio front and rear is correct for your 19” wheels Graham.

Note that with Blackcircles you may be able to specify First Stop as your tyre fitter, and if they’re cheaper than FS maybe you could negotiate a lower price with them?

Eagle F1s are on my Boxster and I have no complaints.

If you buy a TT you'll still have to put new tyres on it from time to time!

Go for it Graham - you know you love driving it when all is well with it!

As ever, Laura is right.
Seen several/lot of TTs on the road and they look a bit bland, the Boxster does not.
wife has given a permission, probably just to shut me up (again…).
Sports cars; nice to have, hard to justify.
 
A bit off topic but I have the twin of your car. i doubt you will find another car at a similar price that drives as well and has lost very little in the last decade. Not a lot of gen 2‘s were sold so should keep reasonable value. Most importantly they drive and sound great at almost legal speeds.
 
Yes, I do agree.
When the planets are all in line the car id fabulous, practical, bit special and not common esp in 2.9 litre.

Going to try one last thing:

Remove rear wheels and swop sides over, see if that kills the drone, but not too hopeful.

Such a pretty car Graham - how could you ever think of parting with it!

This car even gets a 'look-back and stare' when I've left it and locked it, same with the old 911 and of course the LOLA (!)
Must be my tender age.

Just put the rear wheels across the axle so the rotation of forward direction is reversed, just might do something, but not confident.

The rears are about 1/3 worn, the fronts about 1/2 way down.
Could not see any damage, graining, feathering etc on any of them (chassis set-up last year at Zuffenhaus to factory specs).

Such a waste of tyre and £££ to change, but I think this will be just after the looming MoT.

Remember buy PS4S NOT PS4 people are saying. PS4S is a much better tyre than the PS4.

I ran the new conti 7, a much sporty tyre when new in the dry, but not great when a bit worn and hated hitting standing water. the PS4S just works all year round amazing tyre and lasts for ever i am at 16k miles and the rears still ok and hitting water is still fine.

Good heads-up on the 'S' bit too.
The Conti 7 has a wide block width so water can't pass easily (from the pics I've seen, too much of a summer tyre.

These replacements must be all rounders as the car is used that way through the year, this is no garage queen car.

Even before your post I was aiming for PS 4, will check the availability of the S design.

You might find this review of PS4 v PS4S , and Cup2, of some interest. The PS4S is certainly a fabulous tyre on both 981 and 982 cars.
