April news

This month's news from your Boxster Register

With the lighter nights, I’m sure that you’re all enjoying those extra daylight hours to be out and about in your cars. There is nothing like the sound of the engine and exhaust when you’re sweeping along the road. However, with the new emission laws many owners of newer cars are finding the exhaust note not quite so thrilling. I recently spoke to Tom Flavell at JZM Porsche and they have been looking into a solution. They have sourced a very good product for the 718 4.0 and 718 Spyder, which they can now offer. Tom writes:

“The most popular upgrade we do on the 718 range is a JCE race pipe. This exhaust comes silenced or non-silenced and replaces the OEM back box. On the OEM systems you effectively have five silencers in the front of two cats, two OPFs and main silencer. By replacing the main silencer it vastly improves the sound in line with a GT product. Currently there is a big initiative from the DVLA with regards to modification of the emission systems, so any modification that effects either the catalytic converters or OPFs is deemed to not comply with EU/UK road legislation and therefore renders the car illegal for road use. These modifications can still be carried out as long as the car is not used on the road i.e. track use only. Autocar has a good article with a little more in-depth look: ‘Legal fears over aftermarket exhausts following DVSA probe’.

“We are strong advocates for the JCR race pipe series of exhausts as it doesn’t tamper with the emission systems and provides a great soundtrack and high quality parts. All the exhausts are designed and made solely in the UK.

“The key features of the products are:

  • 100% titanium construction
  • Non-silenced exhaust path with valves Closed
  • Direct replacement / quick installation
  • Emissions unaffected - no chance of engine lights
  • Modular Inconel rolled exhaust tips
  • Retains OEM exhaust valve switching capabilities
  • OEM spec Helical Technology titanium exhaust valves
  • 15HP and 6TQ increase
  • -10.12kg weight saving vs. OEM rear silencer”

Thanks Tom, this sounds a great addition. Remember to check that it won't affect your Porsche warranty.

Boxster Challenge
PCGB are continuing the Boxster racing series with the Boxster Cup. This year they are also introducing a new trophy titled the Boxster Challenge, which will be part of the Speed Championship Series. The series is based on sprints and hill climbs and the Boxster Challenge is aimed at 986/987 Boxster models with the trophy awarded at the end of year. It is to be handed to the Boxster driver that achieves the best points performance over the best eight rounds they compete in within the 14-round championship. All cars are welcome from road legal cars to heavily modified non-road legal models. Please contact simonwilson@porscheclubgb.com if interested. If you would rather just spectate then you are very welcome to attend the meetings for both the Boxster Cup and the Boxster Challenge (porscheclubgb.com/motorsport).
