Radio waves

Radio waves

I had an enquiry from Register member Paul Voce regarding what radio or cassette player would have originally been fitted to his 1975 Carrera 2.7. At the time, factory-fitted units were available as options using Coburg, Bamberg, Lübeck, Frankfurt or Köln models from the manufacturer Blaupunkt. These were, however, the exception to the rule but if you had previously obtained a Certificate of Authenticity for your car the option would have been indicated on it.

More often, a radio or cassette player would have been fitted by the supplying dealer, generally again using a unit from Blaupunkt, although those from other manufacturers such as Becker and Philips
were also used.

A lot of the units at that time were mono and for 1974 and 1975 models a speaker would be fitted in the grille in the dash top. For factory-fitted stereo units, a modified rear parcel shelf covering was fitted, incorporating the two speakers. For 1976 and subsequent years, the grille in the dash was removed and instead speakers were fitted in the lower forward area of each door.

Speakers can be fitted in this location in 1974 and 1975 models, but a connecting block for the electric window wiring may need to be moved. Additional stereo speakers in the rear parcel shelf also continued to be offered as an option.
