David Land (from Essex Region) was our guest this evening and gave a talk and demonstration on CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation).
David is an accredited first aider, and began the evening by giving a potted history of how he became involved, firstly whilst working for the GPO and is now available for private tuition. He outlined the symptoms of angina and a heart attack, the signs to look out for and how to help in the most effective way. It was always preferable to have two people assisting, one to stay with the patient and monitor them, and the second person to call for assistance and give relevant details to the emergency services. CPR is only commenced when the patient goes into cardiac arrest. Tony volunteered to be put in the recovery position and then members were given the chance to test what they had learned on "Little Annie".
