More European explorers
This month’s R4 column consists of a second report from our members on an European adventure in the summer.

Chris and Sandra Watkins took their second touring holiday of the year. This time they took their 1988 3.2 Carrera Sport to tackle an eight-day trip through Europe, taking in Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Austria and Italy.

Their first stop was on a Monday night at Epernay in the Champagne region of France. The hotel was great, as was the Comtesse Lafond Champagne House where, following a guided tour, visitors can sample all seven Champagnes and the red wines they produce. They were also treated to a fantastic dinner. Next morning, (not early and following a check on the essential breathalyser kit), Chris and Sandra headed for Stuttgart, and the V8 Hotel at the Motorworld Region museum complex.

Day three would see them driving through Germany, Austria and Italy to their final base in the Dolomites. Here they had four nights at a mountain resort and spa. On each day they had a local tour guide in, with him at the wheel, an extremely fast 1974 Porsche 2.4S taking them on some fantastic routes and calling for lunch at some fine restaurants.

On Sunday morning Chris and Sandra set off for home, taking what they thought would be the fastest route, as they needed to be at The Channel tunnel by 6pm on Monday. The route took them via the Mont Blanc tunnel (€53 one way!) before an overnight stop at Romenay near Dijon.

The trip was fantastic, the best one they have done

Overall verdict of the trip was fantastic, the best one they have done. The car performed well but needed attention to some minor, but costly issues!

Distance covered was 2,392 miles. Fuel consumed was 74 gallons averaging 32mpg, which was very good considering all those mountain climbs

We wish to all our members a happy New Year full of happiness, health and Porsche events.

After our AGM a full programme for 2024 will ensure good driving and good fun for all.
