Porsche 944 Turbo restoration project

Buried in a hedge and rotting from the inside out, this transaxle turbo’s transformation is complete

Avid Porsche Post readers will recognise the name Dan Furr from the Q&A of our March edition, where he briefly touched upon his 944 restoration project. Discovered by his postman, Dan became the latest custodian of one of the earliest 944 Turbo’s to have been registered in the UK.

Upon discovering the first-gen Turbo was living just five miles from home, Dan wasted no time in heading across town with an offer to liberate the tired transaxle from where it had been resting for more than a half-decade.

Sadly years of neglect from sitting in suspended state had allowed the nearby hedge to grow around the car's body, which was rotting from the inside out thanks to a failed sunroof seal. Adding insult to injury, ground moisture had encouraged corrosion to take hold of the car's chassis, while the engine bay had become the home of rodents.

Despite being loaded with desirable factory cost options, including rare staggered Teledial wheels and Porsche script door handles, C96 EYE was facing an uncertain future due to it owner's desire to relocate. Within twenty-four hours of their first encounter, the neglected classic Porsche was freed from the grip of aggressive shrubbery and was taking up residence in Dan's workshop.

Since that time, the car has been subjected to extensive restoration — compromised in every conceivable way, this extraordinary 944 Turbo has undergone major corrective surgery. The original plan had been to showcase the labour of love at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show which was due to be held at the NEC this weekend, but was postponed due to the CV-19 outbreak.

Now for the good news – earlier today the event organisers announced the show has been rescheduled to 7-9 August. Tickets already purchased for 27-29 March will be valid for the rescheduled dates so you need not do anything, just bring the same ticket, which will be valid on any day of your choice.
More information about the show and rescheduled dates can be found here.
