Perfect balance – the new 718 Spyder

Can the new 718 Spyder outdo its track-focused sibling?  Matt Master goes searching for some sun to find out…

While many manufacturers eagerly exploit their heritage for a quick buck, Porsche has always remained circumspect about looting its own back catalogue. With the odd exception, such as purloining ‘Carrera’ for series road cars, the nomenclature is closely guarded and sparingly redeployed.

So it is with the Spyder, a word that graced the aluminium bodywork of Porsche’s very first purpose-built racer, the 550, and has only reappeared a handful of times since, such as on the RS prototype and latterly the range-topping Boxster variants. And it is this last we have today, the much lauded new 718 flagship, appropriately suited and booted here in GT Silver and Bordeaux Red, a tasteful nod to its mid-1950s forebears.
