718 at the Automotive Oscars

Porsche’s mid-engine marvel takes its second gong on the bounce.

Porsche’s mid-engine marvel takes its second gong on the bounce.

The 718 Cayman has just been announced as ‘What Cars?’ sports car of the year for 2018 in the under £50k category. It’s the second year on the trot that the controversial flat-four two-seater has taken this coveted title, eclipsing competition from the likes of Jaguar’s highly acclaimed new 2.0-litre F-Type in the process.

The ‘What Car?’ judges praised the 718’s ‘combination of rev-happy 295bhp petrol engine, superb composure across bumpy roads at speed and modest weight,’ finding it ‘simply superb to drive on public roads.’

The prestigious industry awards ceremony took place in London earlier this week, with representatives from Porsche GB in attendance.

Judges made their decisions based upon all-round driving ability, both trackside and in real world conditions, with packaging and pricing all still vital factors.

‘Consider, too, the Cayman’s high-quality interior and impressive True MPG result,’ the summary reads, ‘and it meets all of our criteria for a top sports car.’

The ‘six or four’ debate is far from settled, but it seems the industry has adjusted.
