Round 4 of the Petro-Canada Lubricants Porsche Club Speed Championship with Pirelli.
The heatwave that this summer will be remembered for continued into August, particularly in south-eastern England, making our sprint round at Goodwood one of the hottest the drivers have experienced – not somewhere you would normally want to be in an increasingly hot Porsche while wearing a race suit, helmet and Nomex!
Three drivers made up Class P3 and they finished the day within 1.65 seconds of each other with Stephen Jory (2.5 ltr 944) putting down a great time in practice but not able to match it in the timed runs and he took third place in 98.45. Simon Parkin (2.5 ltr Boxster) bettered that by just 0.39 seconds to take second place. Points leader Wayne Eason (2.5 ltr Boxster) continues an excellent season and cut his times down over the day in textbook fashion to finish with a 1.26 second margin over Simon to create another class win.
It was a full house of all nine registered drivers in Class P2 at Goodwood with a diverse selection of Porsches that included a 964, a 944, Boxsters, impact bumper-era 911s and two highly modified 924S going head-to-head. Andy Fagan demonstrated his skill and experience yet again with a time of 95.93, not far off the previous class record of 95.62, a result that might have won the class any other time but, at Goodwood on this day, put him in third place.
Out in front, by quite a margin, were Justin Mather and Graham Rose, both in modified 924S’. Driving a supercharged 2.7 ltr 924S, Justin finished the day in 92.01 for second place while Graham, in a 968-engined 924S, took one run and created an astonishing time of 91.74, comprehensively smashing the previous record for P2.
Six drivers entered Class P1 at Goodwood with Andrew Soper collecting his second trophy this season. Competing in a Cayman S, Andrew put in a series of close and consistent times for third place in 100.60. Darren Slater, also driving a Cayman S, put in a storming final run for a personal best of 94.34 that secured him second place.
David Dyson wrung everything he could from his 991 Turbo S but couldn’t quite match his class record-breaking time of 88.55 from last season. It was still a supremely quick time of 88.83 for the FTD and class win and gave him a clear margin of 5.51 seconds – a huge gap in the context of this competition.
