In 1954 at the fifth running of the ‘Carrera Panamericana’ Porsche established themselves as a racing giant slayer with the 550 Spyder.
Driven by Hans Hermann, with a new 120hp 4-cam type 547 engine the car achieved an average speed of 97mph and scored not only a class victory, but also a third overall finish. Thus began Porsche’s tradition of naming all of their fastest production cars ‘Carrera’ in honour of this achievement.
