With 900 years of history, Haddon Hall and Elizabethan Garden, the private residence of Lord and Lady Edward Manners near Bakewell in the Peak District National Park is one of the oldest houses in the country, and one of the only houses in England to have remained in one family’s ownership for its entire existence. The Hall has featured in some of our best-loved films and television programmes, including, The Princess Bride, Jane Eyre and 2024’s Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light.
Venturing into Haddon Hall is like stepping back in time, with its Tudor painted ceiling and furnishings, plus, in the medieval chapel, its very rare 15th century fresco seccos. The spectacular first floor 110ft Robert Smythson designed Long Gallery is reputed to be one of the most beautiful rooms in England.
The terraced Elizabethan Walled Gardens, known for their beauty and structure, cascade down to the River Wye and provide spectacular views of the ancient parkland and Peak District beyond. Recently re-designed by Chelsea award-winning garden designer, Arne Maynard, these are an equally important part of any visit to the Hall.
