Final Draft...

I would have liked to have had our September Zoom a little earlier, as I said in the invite. When chatting to people at events many said how they enjoyed attending and when was the next one to be held. The date had slipped a bit more than I wanted as it takes a bit of admin to check I have all the relevant email addresses. Some members leave the Club, some join, others add their second car details to the Register, so much can change from Zoom to Zoom. After a quick tot up it looks like it could be 5% of email addresses that have issues. If you missed out please let me know when your email problems are sorted and I’ll add you back into the invite list.
On the Zoom it was good to hear how Register cars had been modified, a subject suggestion I had suggested / put in the invite. There were no drastic mods on the call, all were useful and the 3.4 upgrades were interesting / We seemed to have relatively light mods on the call, one was having 3.4 engine upgrades. I’ve been driven in a 3.4 and can say it does make a difference! If you have a subject you think we should discuss please let me know and I’ll put it forward. If you have something you would like to lead on please let me know and I can set aside time for you to ‘take the floor’. Also, if you have a story about acquiring, maintaining, touring or selling a 3.2 in the past, either as an owner or professionally please let me know. I think it would make a good item.
Last year I took the government option of moving my MOT from spring to late autumn. My thought was that if the MOT brought up anything serious I’d now have the winter to rectify it, rather than it spoiling any plans we had for early trips away. Our continental touring holidays would often start in May and one year I nearly got caught out by a partially seized front and rear brake caliper. Usually the car passes without issue but this year was a bit different… Last time I saw Charles and as he checked the car over he thought my front right wheel bearing needed slackening off a bit. I thought the fronts had about the right amount of play to allow for heat expansion and free movement but was pleased of Charles’ expert experience. Modern cars have moved away from the taper roller bearing type and I think it is catching out the younger MOT testers, or is it the rigidity of the test and if there is designed in play, they still have to report it? Over the last year or so I have experienced a number of 3.2s having the same MOT Advisory, “Offside Front Wheel bearing has slight play” yes, it is supposed to have this tolerance! It was the same Advisory for “Nearside”. It would be nice to think that explaining my technician had recently backed off the offside bearing may help driver’s of older cars avoid these Advisories at their MOT.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

For cars that are tucked up, or even in use over winter, it’s worth remembering to keep everything operational. Periodically, I check out the electrical components - wipers (lifted off the screen), washers (windscreen and headlights but covered with a cloth to manage the spray), windows, sunroof, seats, light switches, and horn. If you don’t have tyre trainers, I also recommend moving the car a foot backwards or forwards occasionally to spread the load on the tyre sidewalls and prevent flat spotting. Increasing tyre pressures helps with preserving the shape. I have these tyre trainers ( https://www.porscheclubgb.com/shop/car-care/accessories/tyre-trainers - 2 packs required), they are just about wide enough for the rear 225mm tyres with a few millimetres width spare. I haven’t been successful in driving into them, so jack the car up and slide them under. I have been able to drive out of two when I’ve removed two from the other side. I’m conscious of exerting energy from a cold engine to achieve this, and prefer to drive out of just one rear one.
Now a thoroughly enthusiastic owner’s account from Peter Grunert: ‘If I’m honest with myself, I’ll admit that I’ve spent 25 years window shopping for the 3.2 Carrera Coupe - I finally bought in June 2021. I grew up around German cars (my mother passed her driving test in a 1957 ‘oval window’ Beetle a fortnight before giving birth to me!) and, I’m sure like a lot of members, have a list of 911s I came close to buying over the years… and should have done when prices were lower. Finally, with ‘now or never’ resolution, I contacted Adrian Crawford of Williams Crawford in Cornwall, asking him to search for a car to my preferences. The left-hand drive, Grand Prix White example he recommended is exceptionally original and in wonderful condition, including where rust can lie tucked away in well-used UK market cars. Thoroughly detailed history with the car shows that it was first registered in Milan in late 1985, which makes it a 1986 model year example with slightly better galvanisation and ventilation. Being an Italian market, non-Sport 3.2, it has a clean look with no sunroof, rear wiper or rear spoiler, plus as standard it came with plusher carpeting in the ‘frunk’, air-conditioning (which actually works!) and no rear seatbelts (which I have added, as my 9-year-old daughter enjoys riding along in the back). The interior is blue leather with flannel cloth inserts, remarkably un-frayed but with a subtle patina that reflects how well cared for ‘my 911’ (still pinching myself to say that) has been through the first 36 years and 87,000 miles of its life. The paintwork is original from the centre of the front wings rearward, but the nose had an ancient stone-chip blow-over with yellowing clearcoat, so I’ve had that discreetly fixed. This 3.2 joins a 1975 Mercedes-Benz 280SE in our little fleet – such charismatic, well-engineered classics to suit different occasions’. Thanks, Peter, nicely informative for those with only UK Sport model experience.

I realise time has now moved on but it was good to see regular and new 3.2 owners on the December Zoom, there were some good tips shared and helpful discussions. Thanks for all your support and input since we started using Zoom. Unfortunately, when sending out the invites two new Register members’ email addresses failed. So surprising, as I would have expected they of all members would not be the ones to bounce back as undeliverable because the email address was incorrect or the recipient server was unavailable or busy. Perhaps this can happen when your email was entered onto the Register incorrectly or because your inbox is full. So, if you are a Register member who wants our emails but are not receiving them, please log on to the Club website and update your email address. If you have problems with this, please contact Clubhouse for their help (see telephone number in the front of this magazine).
I’ve been looking after the slumbering car as mentioned last month but haven’t rotated the wheels or put the tyre trainers under them, even if the tyres will be replaced this Spring. I cannot go another year without replacement. The tread is still above the legal limit, but not by as much as I prefer. I heard that sourcing a set of tyres was a bit of a challenge last year, with Continental ceasing production in our sizes and Michelin being low on supply. If the Michelin don’t reappear in Spring, I might try the Pirelli as they are a Club partner and always seem to have a good supply of our sizes. Has anyone got feedback on the Pirelli’s that I can share here?
At the end of last year, I received a number of requests for body shop and Targa top refurbishment recommendations. Owners were looking for somewhere that had previous experience with classics or our models, backed up with recommendations. If you have had work done and can suggest places that provide a reliable service, please let me know so I can pass their details on. I will collate these and save them to our Resources pages online. I have started but it doesn’t cover much of the country so far, your help will be most appreciated.
Finally, an email I received in November from Michael (apologies for the delay): ‘Hi, the attached picture was taken at the NEC in about 2006. This was a ride my son (in the photo) and I had in the Porsche with the Sporting Bears charity. Is the car on your register? If so, the current owner of the car might be interested to see the picture? I recall the owner that day said he was thinking of swapping to a TVR... Best wishes Michael (PCGB member & 944 owner)’. A happy moment in the car’s history, if you know the current owner I can put them in touch with Michael for a copy of the photo.

I'm getting ahead of myself now; draft content for a coming magazine column. Under construction...
Probably to be held over to another month due to magazine column space:

     Battery Conditioner
     TBC...
Back in early spring 2019 I bought a new car battery trickle charger from Lidl, under £14!. I've added it to one that I bought in 2007/8! It's still giving good service. The new one provides further features including pulse charging for discharged batteries, and also a glass mat program for the later variety of battery. If you are in the market it's worth looking out for one when they come around again, also similar available at Aldi.

And
When I'm not running the car for a few weeks I've taken to raising the three wiper arms a little. I've settled on using some of my old brown 'rawlplugs' raided from my diy toolbox, these turn out to be just the right length when placed on end between the screen and the wiper arm, propping it up. This keeps the blade just clear enough of the windscreen to prevent the rubber being under pressure and bent in one direction for prolonged periods. Doing this seems to care for the wipers as I've had much longer service from them, compared to the last set bought from my usual Car Parts retailer. When I'm going to use the car it's now a matter of unclipping the battery conditioner and remembering to remove the three 'rawlplugs' too! Remembering the battery conditioner is connected has been a test for me twice now! As the lead is to the near side it is possible to forget to disconnect it when Sue isn't with me and I don't have to put anything in the luggage area too. I must think of a fail safe I can use in the car to remind me, perhaps a ribon tied on the steering wheel?

And
Thanks for everyone that has updated their vehicle profile on the Club website, My Profile. I had an update implemented that reintroduced the body and interior colour, and I now see what you enter in the Notes section about your car. Please use this if you want the Register to record additional information eg, famous owners, special options, and history; especially enter this if you are thinking of selling. That way you will be passing on the important heritage of the car.

     Wheel centre crest pointing 'thing'
A few years ago, approximately 2016-17 I was at a local Regional event at Hatfield PC. I got talking to one of their Classic trained technician's about the custom (or practice) of positioning the bottom of the wheel centre Porsche crest to point toward the tyre valve. I thought this was a Club thing but it turns out it originates with Porsche. The trainer had worked in the factory many years ago and was now one of the tutors passing on knowledge of the classics. During the course the tutor told him how it was something the factory established. Maybe a bit of controversy/debate here? Please let me know if you have a different story behind this.
