West Wales Scenic Drive 2nd April

R14 First drive of the year

It has been said that “wet weather can dampen the spirit”.  However this was not the case on the 2nd of April when at least 30 members and eighteen cars turned out for our regions first drive of 2016. It was heartening to see such a variety of Porsche models on display ranging from Boxsters, Caymans, 911’s and 924’s. Chris and Gaynor who organised and driven the route two weeks previously had done so in glorious spring sunshine and emphasized the scenic nature of the drive, but for those with convertibles, it was a case of the soft tops remaining firmly closed.

After meeting at The Cothi Bridge Hotel for refreshments and the welcome addition of maps for all, covering the route, eighteen cars set off. The sixty six mile route was very scenic indeed meandering through the Towy Valley passing the Dolaucothi Gold Mine complex, Cwrt Y Cadno and on to a stop at the Llyn Brianne Dam Complex to admire the stunning views, where many photographs were taken.

On route we arranged to meet for refreshments at our Regional Organisers, (Huw) brothers Farm where Ieuan and Diana kindly provided warm welsh hospitality serving us with tea, coffee and much appreciated warm Welsh cakes in the barn, which went down very gratefully. On route to the farm, clearly the local population had got notice of the impending arrival of all the cars with some of the locals gathering on the roads to take photos of the convoy!

After the obligatory photo stop at Llyn Brianne, we set off for a drive along the side of the lakes, where there was some fast and flowing roads to meet us, along with some of the local sheep who were oblivious to us being there, “as clearly the grass is greener on the other side”!!

Finally we tackled the picturesque although quite Narrow and twisty Abergwesyn pass which lead us on to Llanwrtyd Wells and on to our final destination Llandovery, where the landlord of The Kings Head had kindly provided us with a room where we all enjoyed a post drive meal and refreshments. Despite the inclement weather, everyone enjoyed the route and social gathering. A big thank you to Chris and Gaynor for organising the day and to Ieuan and Diana for their hospitality on route
