November news

This month's news from your Thames Valley Region

We would like to express our huge gratitude to Chris and Rosemary Foulger for their support and contribution to R19 events during the last five and a half years and to Chris for producing the monthly column, outstanding work!

RENEGADE BREWERY
A sunny Sunday on 25 August for our latest visit to Renegade. Despite competition from other Bank Holiday Weekend events, we had a good turnout of 23 cars. Food and beverages up to the usual standard and plenty of time to catch up on the latest Porsche news.

WLA Members Air Day

WLAC MEMBERS AIR DAY
Rather cloudy on 31 August but with the cloud ceiling at 3000 feet the airfield was operational. One of our favourite annual events. With 48 Porsches lined up in prime position and a further 100 plus cars of diverse marques, the infield motoring showcase was complete.

A great start to the day was an amazing display by model aircraft and an equally impressive demonstration by nine Tiger Moths creating some astonishing manoeuvres.

As the day progressed, we were treated to a veritable cornucopia of interesting aircraft in flight including two Hawker Hurricanes engaged in a dogfight with a Messerschmitt 108 and the Pitts Specials showing off the superb agility.

On the ground, food and beverages were well catered for and the static aircraft display, model railway and live music were all vying for attention.

Sunny and Shere Hill Climb

SHERE HILL CLIMB
This incredibly popular event has been running for eleven years and support this year was again up to capacity. A hot and sunny start on 1 September with 260 entries competing for best performance over the mile long chase up the 300ft hill. A walk round the main paddock revealed a great collection of classic vehicles covering at least 100 years of motoring including 16 Porsche entrants ranging from a very early 356 right up to a 918 Spyder Hybrid. A good turnout of R19 members with time to take advantage of a choice of catering stalls, live music and great weather.

JOHN AND JANE EVANS
We had been given notice, but the day had finally dawned – our indefatigable and dynamic duo of Joint ROs, John and Jane, have stepped down for a well-deserved rest. Five and a half years of non-stop dedication to the role brought ‘Most Improved Region’ in the first year followed by two consecutive years as ‘Region of the Year’ and subsequently a 75th year trip to Stuttgart. Limited space here precludes the opportunity to do justice to their full achievements but with over 250 events/experiences during their tenure this was nothing short of outstanding and probably unique in the Club’s history. The ethos of an ‘All-inclusive and welcoming Region’ achieved beyond doubt.

At the WLAC event Andy Gardiner, on behalf of R19 members, presented a photographic record covering many of the events together with gifts donated by individual members.

The Clubhouse team, represented by Steve Gillings, sent their best wishes and congratulations in recognition of an outstanding job well done.

In John and Jane’s own words:

“Best moments – Brooklands goes Porsche and Brooklands German Day.

“Scary moments – that they would organise an event and nobody would turn up! Vision of a lonely Arctic Silver 997.2 standing in an empty car park defiantly displaying the number plate ‘R19s OK’ – you bet it is!”

R19 is indeed OK!
