For those Nineteeners mature enough to remember when Richard Gere had dark hair and Julia Roberts had a smile wider than Arthur Daly, then on 17 August you can embrace your inner ‘Pretty Woman’ by joining R19 at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club (SL4 4TH).
It’s an all-day event from 12:30pm where you’ll be enthralled by a series of chukkas where tight-clad young men charge around on horseback looking for a small white ball whilst swinging mallets around in apparent frustration. Your job is to knowingly applaud and lounge around quaffing wine assuming you’ll be accompanied by your chauffeur/partner who’ll be remaining clear-headed for the drive back home.
If you tire at attempting to fathom out what the commentators are going on about you can head straight to the ‘Kidz Fun Zone’ to belly-flop onto an array of bouncy castles, though R19 does recommend you’re accompanied by a child at all times.
Others can head for the Polo Bar for a dazzling range of drinks to slake any thirst and then onwards to a range of food stalls offering tasty tit-bits. You can, of course, bring your own tucker in a hamper, nibble away on your tartan blanket and play ‘Royal for the Day’ until sunset.
DJs and live music are laid on for those who’ve tired of conversation and simply wish to foot-tap and be merry. There’ll also be the now traditional ‘stomping of the divots’ but be sure you choose your divot from your equine deposit wisely.
All this for a remarkable (and discounted) cost of £27 plus booking fee per vehicle. Assuming you’ve a Cayenne with a roof-rack, you can stuff it to the gunwales with obliging family members to bag yourself what might be the bargain of the year. Otherwise just come in a two-seater. There is a reserved Porsche Club parking and our own picnic area. You can also avail yourself of a VIP picnic table if you wish. This is always a popular event, so gallop (rather than canter) to book via the link below, quoting the code PC25.
