Join us for a fantastic day out
on Sunday 17 August, starting with an interesting 56 minute country road drive to Fyvie Castle which is a magnificent fortress in the heart of Aberdeenshire. Fyvie Castle’s 800-year history is rich in legends, folklore and even ghost stories. Discover the amazing collection of antiquities, armour and lavish oil paintings. Stroll around the picturesque loch, or visit the restored glass-roofed racquets court and ice house.
But stories aside, we do know William the Lion was at Fyvie around 1214 and later Robert the Bruce and Charles I were among its royal guests.
Art lovers will appreciate the rich portrait collection, including one of the largest private collections of Raeburns in the world. There's an equally impressive collection of fine furniture, tapestries, arms and armour throughout. Admire the impressive portrait collection, including works by Raeburn, Batoni, Romney, Gainsborough, Opie, Lawrence and Hoppner.
On arrival we will be invited to park our cars on the south lawn in front of the castle (ground conditions permitting) for an iconic photo opportunity. This is a National Trust property and whilst parking in the normal car park is free for NTS members (£5 for non-members) we are asked for a donation of £3 for the privilege of parking on the lawn.
We will be offered guided tours of the castle in groups of approx 15 and while one group is on a tour other groups can sample the delicious food and cakes in the cafe or explore the walled castle gardens which have been redeveloped as a garden of Scottish fruits and vegetables, or wander in the wider grounds to Fyvie loch which supports a wide range of wildfowl and occasionally Ospreys; there is lots to do.
We will meet at the Craibstone Park & Ride at 10:15am for a 10:30am departure. We have planned an interesting
ROUTE and should arrive at the castle at approx 11:30am.
Entry to the castle and tours are free for NTS members but otherwise £17 per adult or £13.50 concession. Tours last 45 minutes and run from 10:45am and every 45 minutes until 3:15pm.
You are free to leave when you like.
