A vintage affair
Our programme for the year continues to roll out. The Vintage Sports Car Club Motorsport Festival, a local event at Cadwell Park, saw some exciting racing with drivers testing their vintage machines to the limit. A trip round the paddock gave the opportunity for a close-up and personal view of the participants.

Cadwell Park was also the venue for the national PCGB Air-cooled Porsche event in April.

Lunch at The Leagate

Lunch at The Leagate in April was well deserved after a challenging route along the lanes of mid Lincolnshire to work up an appetite.

2022 North Yorkshire Classic Rally
On 3 April, R4 members Rowena Purdy and Ric Hands competed in the North Yorkshire Classic Rally in Rowena’s 1966 SWB Porsche 912. Starting from Easingwold as one of 60 entrants, this was the pair’s first event together for more than 15 years and a lot of rust had to be removed!

Rowena reports: “The route circumnavigated York with six regularity sections in the morning separated by three test venues with eight tests before lunch followed by a further four in the afternoon with one test venue having five tests.

“Speeds and timings are calculated to provide a tight average speed through the section with each second lost or gained at unknown timing points costing a penalty point. Tests are all held off road and are timed to the second. This is the opportunity for the driver to shine as there is a bogey time to achieve while driving round cones or other carefully placed obstructions as fast as possible. (Each cone hit results in a 10-second penalty.)

“Our route took us to the first test south of Easingwold and then round York, via four tests on a disused airfield near Acaster Selby, before a further three tests at the Yorkshire Museum of Farming near York. The route took us further north to Yorkshire Lavender at Terrington where lunch was provided. We then headed even further north to a quarry near Pickering for the final five tests on some of the worst surfaces I had seen since leaving Kenya! These tests were followed by the final two regularities, which took us back, via Helmsley, to Easingwold market place where the town had turned out to see us all finish the event.

“The event was very well organised and most enjoyable whilst coming to terms with lack of seat time in Poppy (driver) and timings, maps and average speed calculations with temperamental electronic timers (navigator).”
