There’s more than a little irony, that in this the month we decide to honour the 40th anniversary of one of Porsche’s greatest racing machines, the company decides to pull the plug on its ‘factory’ hypercar involvement in the World Endurance Championship.
Yet history has shown time and time again that, when global car businesses come under severs financial pressure, motorsport activities are an obvious area where economies can be made. At least the 963 will continue to be seen in the American IMSA series next year.
As for the dear old 962c, it remains everything that an endurance sports car should be, possibly even one of the greatest ever. Together with its closely related twin, the 956, the 962c absolutely dominated 1980s sports car racing at the highest level.
