If you have the Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) fitted to your car, either as original equipment or as a retrofit, you’ll have an associated small box a little smaller than the control unit for a vintage remote locking system. It’s the piece of electronic wizardry that tells the VTS that the car isn’t being stolen, that it doesn’t have to warn the control centre and that coppers in fast cars are not needed on your tail. Where do you keep this vital little box?
Some owners tuck them away in the car, perhaps in the glovebox or in the centre armrest. Others don’t even know that the dealer left them there to carry out their work entirely under the RADAR.
Simon Ambler, Head of Lockton Performance, your Club’s insurance partner, is clear about why this isn’t a good idea. "A tracking system provides an additional layer of security, helping police to trace and potentially recover your vehicle should it be stolen. Insurers regard this as an invaluable way of reducing the risk of theft,” he says. “To ensure optimal protection, always remove the driver’s fob from the vehicle when unattended. Leaving it inside could compromise the system, preventing the vehicle from being detected as stolen.”
Not only may you not get your car back: you may also not receive the insurance pay-out. “This may constitute a breach in policy conditions, resulting in the insurer being within their rights not to settle a theft claim,” warns Simon.
