Stay on the right track with Lockton

Club partner Lockton insurance explain the ins and outs of track cover

As one of the biggest arrangers of insurance cover for classic, sports and supercars, it will come as no surprise that Lockton is frequently asked about cover when people want to drive their cars on a motor racing circuit or similar facility.

Club partners Lockton insurance have written about this before, and they wanted to provide an update on how their policies provide protection when you take to the track.

If your track day is in the UK and organised by Porsche Club GB, then the policyholder only is covered automatically subject to policy terms and conditions. This includes an increased excess and limitation on the amount that will be paid out. There is no additional charge for these events. If additional drivers are required, please get in touch prior to the event and this scenario must be referred to the underwriters for agreement.

Where the track day is being organised by someone other than the club, then this is NOT covered automatically, and you will need to speak to Lockton in advance. As a broker, Lockton will need to refer the event to insurers so that they can consider providing cover. A charge will be made for covering for these events, and they may also have a higher excess and value limitation.

It is worth noting that the charge they make is likely to be significantly less than purchasing standalone track day cover via one of the motorsport insurance specialists.

Events at non-UK circuits and Hill Climbs cannot usually be insured under the policy. Lockton can refer to insurers for individual requests for cover.

Parade laps can be covered without charge, but Lockton will need to know in advance and whilst most can be agreed, they are unable to provide blanket cover.

If an event or trip includes parade laps, Lockton will get these agreed in advance.

Competitive use of any sort is not insured by Lockton’s policy. Lockton do have access to motorsport insurance specialists if you are racing in any capacity and separate cover can be arranged at additional cost.

2023 was a busy year for car enthusiasts and Lockton want to make sure that you can continue to enjoy your car, both on the road and track.

If you are in any doubt as to whether an event is covered, please talk to them for further guidance.
