Silverstone Auctions Porsche Sale hailed a resounding success

Held in conjunction with Porsche Club GB, over 300 Porsche fans attended the inaugural Porsche-only Sale.

The inaugural Porsche Sale held at Silverstone Circuit in conjunction with Porsche Club GB was a resounding success, with 70% of cars sold to their new owners, yielding a total sales value of £2,747,000.

Held at The Wing auction room, Sunday’s sale saw over 300 Club members and Porsche enthusiasts assemble at Silverstone Circuit to bid on nearly sixty high-quality classic and modern sports cars and their related automobilia. Visitors to the sale were able to enjoy a Porsche Club GB track day on the GP circuit as well as an open day and lunch at the Porsche Experience Centre, not forgetting the auction itself.

Headlining the inaugural sale results was a ‘first of 500’ 1973 Porsche 2.7 RS Touring, pictured at the top of this page. Long regarded as one of the most significant cars in the 911 RS line up, Porsche enthusiasts flocked towards this high-quality and very rare example. The car, which was optioned driver-focussed upgrades including a limited-slip differential and Recaro sports seats from the factory, reached an astounding price of £410,625 in the auction room.

Meanwhile, a later 2007 Gen 1 911 ‘997’ GT3 RS in striking Orange with Black decals was sold to its new owner for £168,750, £28,750 over its upper estimate. The immaculate example had covered just 5,527 miles from new and is believed to be one of the lowest mileage 997 GT3s in existence.

Proving that low-mileage and provenance status is of the upmost importance, a 18,900-mile 1991 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet was sold for a believed record. The two owners from new example was sold for £27,560.

Another low-mileage Porsche convertible spiked the interest of the saleroom, this time a limited edition one of 150 right-hand drive 2004 Boxster S 550 Anniversary edition. With the unique status of having just one owner from new, full Porsche service history as well as having covered just 2,800 miles from new, it reached £23,850 on the day.

Finishing the highlights is a significant Porsche-built one-off ‘Project 50’, which was sold to a bidder in The Wing auction room for £173,250, nearly £50,000 over its lower estimate. Built by Porsche Central Operations in 2014 as a celebration of the 911s 50th anniversary, the car was built using modern technology and parts to reflect the very best of 50 years of the 911 development and evolution.

Based on a 1977 911 Lux, the car was completely stripped and rebuilt in aid of the anniversary celebrations. Powered by a 993 development engine with race-spec cams, stopped by ‘G-Series’ 930 front brakes and 3.2 Carrera rear brakes and using a rebuilt gearbox and brand new exhaust system, ‘Project 50’ is presented ready to be enjoyed by its new owner in enviable specification.

Supported by Porsche Club GB, the UK’s only official Porsche owners club, The Porsche Sale saw nearly twenty member consigned cars entered in the auction, as well as a large club marquee and support. Club members were able to consign their cars free of charge to the sale as well as attend the auction on the day with a discounted catalogue.

Nick Whale, Managing Director of Silverstone Auctions commented on the sale and said, “The Porsche Sale was our first marque-specific event and I couldn’t have wished for a better outcome. As ever, the sun shone at Silverstone and Porsche Club GB members and enthusiasts flocked to The Wing auction room in their masses. The partnership of both parties continues for next year as we renew our commitment to The Porsche Sale in 2016.

“This sale is a true testament to the quality of cars consigned by both Porsche Club GB and the Silverstone Auctions team – representing what we feel to be the very best cars available on the current market. Our commitment to sell the very best examples of classic and modern sports cars continues at our next sale at the NEC Classic Motor Show Sale next month [14-15 November], where once again we have a number of sensibly guided Porsches for auction in the two-day sale, alongside other marques too. We hope to see you there.”

Chris Seaward, General Manager of Porsche Club GB said, “The Porsche Sale was a superb weekend and I am very proud of what the Club and Silverstone Auctions have been able to achieve in both consignments and attendance. Sunday’s sale just goes to show the power of the Porsche marque in the current market and I can’t wait for next year’s sale here at Silverstone.”
