Richard Attwood’s relationship with Porsche spans more than five decades and touches almost every aspect of the marque, from the very highest level of motorsport to the careful, considered development of road drivers.

After achieving overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 driving for Porsche, Richard continued to race for Porsche AG between 1969 and 1971. Those years not only cemented his place in the brand’s history, but also laid the foundations for a lifelong involvement in the way Porsche cars are driven, understood, and enjoyed.

Following his racing career, Richard’s focus gradually shifted toward working directly with Porsche customers. From 1974 to 1985, he was closely involved with Swinford Motors, a Porsche main dealer, alongside Jack Edmonds and Keith Rowley. During this period he helped develop and support early customer track days and promotional activities, long before such experiences became commonplace.

In 1988, Porsche launched a series of promotional events known as Kinetic Art at the Millbrook Proving Ground. Richard was involved from the outset, and these activities evolved into Porsche’s high-performance driving days at Millbrook, running through to 1997. It was during this time that he began working with Bernard Aubry, a collaboration that would prove influential for Porsche’s future driver development programmes.

Richard later worked alongside Bernard Aubry on a six-week evaluation programme for Porsche GB, testing the first four-wheel-drive Turbo models. Sixty selected customers took part, with the aim of understanding driver preferences between manual and Tiptronic transmissions. This blend of technical development and real-world driver feedback became a recurring theme in Richard’s work.

As Porsche’s customer engagement programmes expanded, Richard continued to play a key role. He was involved in customer driving days run by Jeremy Snook, and later worked with Gordon Robertson delivering one-to-one experiences for new 911 Turbo and Cayenne Turbo purchasers. These combined road driving with Millbrook sessions and formed the blueprint for what would eventually become the Porsche Experience Centre as it exists today.

Richard continued instructing and coaching drivers through to 2021, bringing with him not only the credibility of a Le Mans winner, but decades of insight into how high-performance road cars can be driven smoothly, safely, and with genuine understanding.
