Ivan’s coaching ethos is simple: to help enthusiastic drivers safely extract more from their sports cars, more of the time; making each drive thoroughly enjoyable, engaging, safe and supremely rewarding.  This is as much to do with mindset and a little psychology as it is with physical techniques and skills: controlling the wider environment in which we drive as well as the car.

A lifelong passion for driving has seen him working as a motoring journalist, as a project manager of car launches and driving events for manufacturers including BMW, Honda, Jaguar and Volvo, and competing at a modest level in rally driving.  Over time, this led to him instructing at rally schools on spare weekends, where he discovered a real joy in helping others ‘feel’ the car and develop their driving fluidity. 

His Eureka moment came when managing BMW’s M Power Institute, a performance driving course offered to first owners of E39 M5s, and being so fortunate as to work alongside some incredibly talented instructors.  Whilst humbling, it was hugely inspirational to realise how little he understood about driving and then reset; absorbing, implementing and consolidating all he could from the wealth of knowledge and expertise around him.  So much so, Ivan left the security of employment in 2003 to pursue a career in performance driver coaching.

Having gained the relevant legally required qualifications and beyond, Ivan worked as a freelance instructor for Porsche, plus for AMG, BMW, Lotus and others for 5 years before forming his All Road Training business in 2008, which continues to provide advanced driver training to corporate clients such as H.R. Owen PLC (predominantly delivered for the last 15 years by this programme’s team leader, Rob Colbourn). 

With performance driver coaching being where Ivan’s real passion lies, he started Total Car Control Ltd in 2012, dedicated to providing carefully tailored, road-focused performance driving courses for sports car owners.  Courses are delivered at Millbrook Proving Ground and then on great driving roads for real world translation of dynamic car control.  Due to the popularity of these courses, it is likely that Ivan will need to be on the periphery of the Porsche Club GB Driver Training Programme; yet he’s delighted to be part of it and to support Rob.
