Throttle pedal dead - can anyone help please?

On Tuesday last week, on my 2000 2.7 Boxster, driving down our street went over a very small bump in the road and the throttle went dead. Rolled the car back to the house and left it for 10 minutes, re-started it and the throttle was working again. When the throttle stops responding, the car just rests at idle.

Called the AA out, who found no fault codes. They followed me around the block where it almost made it back before going over a speed bump and the throttle went dead again. This time, it would not work with a restart, and would not work when left.

Had the car recovered to a local specialist (Williams Crawford in Saltash, Cornwall), who have tested another pedal unit, which did not make a difference. They've also checked the ECU as they said the plug was a little loose which would explain when the car went over a bump that the throttle cut out if a connector was loose relating to that function I guess, however securing the plug has made no difference, and beyond that they have not been able to find any fault.

Their next port of call is for them to try a new MAF and new brake pedal switch. If that's not the problem, they said it could be a wiring fault.

The costs of the investigation work is growing, and I need the car back as I drive it daily.

Has anyone come across this issue before? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Give Steve Winter a call at Jaz Porsche Specialist in St Alban's he is our Boxster Technical Advisor he might have come across this before.

It does sound as though you've got a bad electrical connection somewhere in the wiring harness, exacerbated by the bumpy road surface. Modern cars have a fuel shut-off device which activates in a crash but I think that has to be reset manually, so I doubt that's the source of your problem, but it might be worth checking it out.

Williams Crawford should have a decent diagnostic set, but if there aren't any error messages then unfortunately it's just going to be a process of elimination.

Don't think it's the fuel cut off switch, as the car will idle without any issues. It's like the throttle just is not responding to anything anymore.

I knew I should have got the 2.5 with cable throttle :(

Just to point out that if you disconnect the MAF the engine will run in a default mode, so that may be worth a try before replacing it.

Brake pedal switch..?? Always a possibility - and I've heard of stranger things happening with all the interrelated electronics..!

Williams Crawford are trying a new brake pedal switch today, and a new MAF to rule it out (if it's not that, they aren't charging for it).

Getting to the stage now where I'm losing the will to live with it :(
 
Okay, just an update... The car is back.

They replaced the brake pedal switch as it was stuck in, and fell apart when removed.

Collected the car, and they said it was under powered. So after some more investigation they found that the MAF was also faulty, so they've replaced that with a Bosch one.

Collected the car again, and it was still a bit flat. So I did the throttle reset that I found on various forums and google searches, and took the car for a good spirited drive and it seems back to normal now.

Fingers crossed!
