Front Bumper air duct mesh

On the back of my ac condenser failure, in having to fit two new ones with the front bumper removed I am thinking of fitting some mesh behind the duct opening cross bars.
I have been been meaning to purchase & fit some Zunsport grilles but now I have to remove the front bumper anyway, am thinking I will buy some plastic meshing and make my own.
My question is what size of meshing is optimum to stop stone damage/debris ingress but will not reduce air flow into the duct.
Have seen some meshing on ebay which has a cell size 15mm x 10mm and 25mm x 15mm.
I just wondered what size mesh anybody else has fitted or indeed what size mesh the Zunsport mesh is?

I'd buy the Zunsports again and again.
I've got the black ones.
Mesh diamond size is around 10x10 from memory

Thing is if you fit your own mesh when the bumper's off, if you need to change it or repair it in the future, you'll have to take the bumper off again.

I've had the same issue on my 718 S.
4000 miles in both coolers were damaged. They aren't covered under warranty but given I'd only owned the car three weeks they were repaired by Porsche Cardiff.
As its clearly a design fault I intend to go after Porsche under the Sales of Goods Act - goods not fit for purpose.
It seems the issue is widespread - surely its time Porsche issued a recall and retrofitted grills?

Nice work Madelvic

I like that a lot - cant beat a bit of homemade stuff and ingenious thinking.

Well if a 718 ac condenser is failing then my 6 year old 981 condensers have done well.
I have had this 981 for 15 months and once I became aware of the problem with leaf debris etc whilst I had my 987.1, I regularly check the ducts whenever I wash the car.
I blow out the leaves with compressed air and the dead flies from the surface of the condenser.
It certainly seems a "design fault" but most modern day cars have the rads/condensers in these positions these days.
Yet I understand that most OPC's frown on fitting duct opening meshing.
With the condenser still in place, I'm not sure whether mine has failed due to stone damage or pin-holing. The leak is on the bottom outer edge of the offside condenser.
So will be fitting two new condensers plus some meshing.

Have been reviewing what to buy to mesh the duct openings.
Halfords and other online retailers sell black aluminium mesh at about £25 for a piece to do both ducts.
The aluminium mesh is probably more likely to become damaged itself but at least the mesh stand material itself is thin and therefore will hinder air flow less.
The plastic mesh may have larger openings and the plastic itself will be less prone to damage, but in order to have reasonable strength the mesh grid is thicker which must reduce the total air flow through the opening.
Now I suspect the difference is minimal so suspect its personal choice and which is easier to fit.

Well all I can say is have fitted Zunsport grilles to my 981 S and 981GTS and about to fit to a 987.2

Porsche Cambridge have had no problem with any car so far and is discussion with Porsche Portsmouth their view is fairly relaxed but would want to see the exact mesh before confirming ona case by case basis (but there was an admission that they have worked on cars with grilles by Zunsport)

On my 2007 987.1 I removed the front bumper and hoovered out a load of compost and leaves from the rad/condensor. Replaced the bumper and fitted Zunsport grills as don't want to have to take the bumper off again... The grills were real easy to fit.
Amazing porsche haven't fixed the design flaw.

Did you fit the grills with the bumper in place.
Do they need any drilling etc?
Thanks

The Zunsport grilles are fitted from the front.
You don't have to remove the bumper so they are great for you to be able to fit at home with zero hassle.
All you really need is a flat screwdriver to bend the clips back once you are happy they are in place.

For Sale - Zunsport 981 front grille set ! £140

All are in superb condition

They were made by Zunsport and are in the powder coated black finish with cutouts for the parking sensors.

The grilles, after a bit of fiddling just clip into the outer vents although I found it best to add the security of a micro thin cable tie.

The centre grille has two screws that locate into the plastic.

Had my Zunsport in the 981 S for 6 years now and they do keep the rubbish out that is thrown at the front of the car. Make sure when fitting that you put tape on the paintwork to ensure it is not scratched when pushing the frame home. Never had a problem with air flow/cooling even in very hot weather abroad. Porsche fit them as standard to their fast machines!

The absence of grills is made even more annoying when the car does not qualify for an extended warranty if Zunsport grills are fitted. Stupid!

Finally got round to replacing the ac condensers and fitting a new drier unit.
I opted to buy some plastic mesh and have fitted it to the rear of the duct opening cross bars with cable ties.
