Deano's 981 S tinkering thread

Next up was rattles! Now i'd say this is one of the most well put together cars i've owned but i am seriously OCD!

There was lots of minor noises, all from behind me. They were all easy to locate and fix by just tapping trim. Some notable ones:

- trim under the seat belt cover

- metal on metal under the cross brace

- all of the rear hatch trim

- the hatch itself on the bump stops

- the latch mechanism

- oil and water caps

- manual hatch release cable

- amp wiring

It was all solved with 2 x roles of foam tape and some duck tape over the trim clips that rattle around when 2 bits of trim are clipped together.

Lights! I like a night drive and have a fair bit of experience modifying xenons. As a first step while i do some more research i have Osram CBIs powered by morimoto 55w ballasts, new CBI flashers and LED side indicators. the only interior bulb that was not LED was the front trunk so i did that. The camera phone doesn't really pick it up but there must be 40% more light and it's a nearer 6000k rather than 5000k

Hey guys and girls.

I've had my car a couple of weeks now and have started tinkering and improving already. I thought i'd make a thread to keep it all in the same place. It's a great record and may be helpful to a few people.

First up i had to give it a proper detail:

The red paint on the keys looks great. I just hope it doesn't chip off when jangling against the change in your pocket. On second thoughts, in our wonderful new 'swipe for everything' society nobody keeps change in their pockets, do they?

Thank you. Time will tell. It is a factory option so hopefully not. I certainly don't have coins. I have one of those slim RFID wallets.

Hi Dean and Alan

I had the factory option of colour coded keys when I got my Cayman new 4 years ago. They do indeed chip and especially if you have a tendency to drop them like I do.

I have have it protected in a Porsche Drivers Selection key pouch - but I still manage to chip it the odd time. That's why I have kept the second key unused.

It also get small chips after using it in the ignition switch after a while.

I just touch it up with mu Chipex paint when it gets too bad!

The pouch is nice! I have no issue spraying them every now and again - tops 30 mins all in.

Hi Deano, it’s great to watch the care & effort you’re putting in to this car. I saw the car when it first arrived at the dealer as a trade in and pre-cleaned (I’m building up my knowledge with the hope of buying one in due course, 981 variant likely non-S). I knew it was above my budget when I saw it was an S but when I peaked inside and saw the spec I knew for certain too much for me. It was a lovely example and with the enhancements I look forward to buying it off you in a few years😂. Look forward to seeing more updates. regards, Kevin.

Thanks Kevin. I'm a lucky boy. I had the daily alerts coming in for nearly 3 months before this car and spec popped up and I just had to have it. Deposit was down a few hours later and the Bristol guys were fab.

Stay tuned on progress. I'm currently talking to ngenco about their spray protect paint protection for the whole car. A big investment but a car this beautiful and in this colour deserves it I reckon.

Dean

Just booked the car in to Cambridge OPC for the new PCM firmware, latest maps and online services retrofit so that it does the real-time traffic.

Badges are off ready for the 2 stage polish and ngenco protect. Quite like it!

I plan to put mat black "981 Cayman S" on the bumper like the 718.

I'd be keen to know about this upgrade as I'm very unimpressed with the sat nav. Real time traffic is essential I think but my OPC wasn't familiar with the upgrade when it was rumoured 18 months ago. Great to read about your progress to date btw.

The Cambridge OPC service guy knew all about straight away. You have to get pcm firmware, 7 digit postcode, new maps then add online services

Reading this with great interest. I'm about to start tackling some rattles in my newly acquired 981 Cayman S. There's a bad one coming from the o/s storage bin cover. How did you remove it? (Picture 6 in your post.).

Thanks, Simon

Hi Simon. Dead easy. Remove the piece of trim around where the seatbelt goes in by pulling up and out from the bottom below the belt then around the cross brace. Once that's off you will see a single nut holding that piece on. Undo that then it slides towards the front of the car and lifts out.

The issue is all the little plastic weld rivets, they are not a uniform size so it moves. Also the very edge of the rear 1/4 window trim needs a bit of packing.
