Has it been tested on PIWIS or Durametric and if so what were the results.

Has the correct sensor been replaced? Bank 1 is not the same side on a Cayman v 911 and PIWIS and Durametric think in 911 terms.

Have the exhaust gaskets been checked, if damaged these can cause issues as described.

I went through a similar issue, Engine CEL, Cruise, PSM and Stop/Start all failed. My issue was an intermittent Lambda sensor failure (check the voltage) and that was replaced. But the exhaust manifolds that had been taken off were not re-fitted properly so air was getting in causing almost the same set of error messages.

I am at my wits end! I have run my Porsche Cayman S for a year; it has been completely pampered by one previous owner and if there was a hint of an issue everything was replaced. So service history is really impressive. A few weeks ago I started getting random ECU faults pop up. Engine warning, Check oil, Coolant which of course were a big worry. As far as the coolant is concerned, there is absolutely no loss of coolant and a switch off and on usually sorts it out. As far as the oil is concerned, the check oil level warning light comes on. Once I cycle through the check it satisfies itself, once again, that the oil is completely toppers. There are no fault codes for these latter issues and the one for the Engine pointed towards the MAF sensor, which was duly changed. The car felt tip top for about a day after which the warning light came back on again and the other 2 random faults keep coming back. The only symptoms I get are the engine sounding slightly lumpy at idle and the very occasional hesitation under acceleration. It was thought that the MAF was the cure. It is back in the garage to see what else might be the problem. So, my question is, has anyone experienced something similar in terms of ghost problems, intermittent faults or has a gem of information that might help. Help!

I have to go along with Archie in the first instance - just make sure that the battery is in tip-top condition before looking elsewhere. Any motor factor should be able to carry out a battery test for you.

If the battery's OK then a full diagnostic check is essential to see if any error codes are being flagged-up. Since the MAF sensor has been changed, the rough idle could be plug or coil-pack related, or maybe you have a slight intake leak somewhere or the AOS is on its way out.

Intermittent faults are a real pain but it's just a process of elimination.

Hi all, many thanks for the suggestions which I will follow up. Battery is less than a year old but I will put a meter across it to rule out. AOS scares the pants off me but priority will be given to that check today! I will keep you posted!

 
Hi folks, just to let you know that my car is back in fine fettle. It turned out to be 3 separate issues; the MAF sensor, the Oil Level Sensor and low coolant. Spookily enough, even though the MAF was changed the ECU would not accept the fact at first! I ran the engine without the MAF connected then reconnected and quick as a flash it was sorted. Idle lumpiness has gone, throttle response is crisp and no hesitation present when accelerating in any gear. Oil Level Sensor just needed a good clean and it has not reared its ugly head. Coolant level was low but not excessively. The difficulty here is that it is impossible to do a quick visual inspection. So all is well now with the mechanicals. Just the tyres now to finish my preps for a 3,000 mile trip round Europe in August www.rallyforheroes.com. Do we get a discount anywhere through Porsche GB? I've just received a £100 card from Michelin after fitting MP4S N0's to my 981CS. The steering Ackerman effect that afflicts these cars is now gone, the ride is very slightly better, and quieter. Can't comment on the handling as haven't explored it yet. :)

 
Steven, it may be useful to others and much appreciated I'm sure if you do a little write up of how you did the work to sort out the problems, oil sensor and such in the Technical Articles Section.
