Replacement Tyres

Hi everyone,

Its time to replace the tyres on my 1994 993 Carerra 2 - plenty of tread left but have been advised that they are starting to crack and probably getting a bit hard! I have 18 inch turbo rims on the car ( bought it that way 8 years ago) but I have always preferred the look anyway.
Know that there have been plenty of posts about choice of tyres but can't see anything recently and know that there are now tyres available all the time with constant developments. Used for road use only and prefer the ride to be soft rather than hard. Any comments and recent experiences would be appreciated. Thanks. Emyr

Just to let you know that I went with the Michelin Sport Pilot 2 .... what an amazing improvement ... much quieter and so grippy. Thanks for the recommendation.

there are some good deals on the Pirelli Rossos at the moment - check the owners club magazine - a set of 4 for my 4S ended up costing around 680 when you take account of he 100 cash back Pirelli will give me. I thought that pretty good.

With the recent advances in tyre technology is there any real need to run N rated tyres?

I have pilot sport 4's on another non Porsche car and they work well, I suspect they would out perform a PS2 if fitted to a Porsche?

Having also run "R spec" semi slick tyres on a 993, I have manged to keep it on the road even in wet conditions, so why do we still consider the N spec essential?
I have never seen an insurance proposal suggest I need N spec rubber on the Porsche, only the assumption that the tyres would be road legal.
After all, for enjoyment and self preservation it makes sense to use quality rubber on the 993.

Have you ever spoken to a tyre manufacturers R&D dept? Or even to a UK based head office?
"N" rated tyres are usually about tolerances of manufacture. Tolerances of diameter and aspect ratio and other criteria. I spoke to Goodyear regarding some 18" tyres I fitted onto my Boxster as they were catching the wheel arch liner on full lock in reverse. This did not occur with the previous set of tyres which were fitted.
I was informed that the diameter on some of their tyres could fluctuate due to the limits of manufacture.

Ray, I tend not to call Manufacturers head offices or R&D departments before buying tyres.
If I am buying a tyre from a premium manufacturer that has a Y speed rating, it is tested up to 300kmh or 186mph.
As there are stringent tests on such products and the size and shape of the tyre will be different at 5mph and 186mph, I assume they are made to a consistent standard. Maybe it was a bad batch you purchased?

Tyre technology has come a long way in the last few years, I think it would make sense to use the best tyres from premium manufacturers to take advantage of the tech.

I have no scientific evidence of this, other than actual use, but I would expect a modern design Michelin Ps4 to be a better tyre in terms of construction and performance than an N rated Bridgestone S02 with tech that is over 15 years old!?

Maurice,
No offence taken at all. There is as you infer plenty of information out there, some good and some not so good.

I was just looking on Rennlist (another Porsche forum) which clearly has a US bias of owners.
It seems a lot of the 993 drivers are fitting non N rated tyres, including the PS4.

Interesting from the point of suitability in a more litigious society than our own?

Interesting Maurice, over the years I have known enough Porsche owners who have used R rated semi slick track tyres driving to and from track days without issues. Including the odd claim.
I have passed an Mot test myself with these type of tyres with above minimum legal read depth.
Honestly, I think a fair proportion of drivers of older Porsche who do not frequent forums, have little idea of N ratings?

I am now looking at replacing my tyres on my 993 Cabriolet with Michelin Pilot Sport 2.
As I am also a member of R6 North Wales, may I ask where you had your replacement tyres fitted? Thanks Paul W.

i used black circles for a full set ps2 n2 very good job done would use them again,
oh yes i did diddnt i !!!!

Hello Paul,

Apologies for not having looked into this post for a long while - I honestly couldn't believe it was still running!! To answer your question I ordered them from Blackcircles and were fitted by my local ATS garage in Denbigh ( ATS own Blackcircles by the way). I have used ATS for my other cars in the past, however, before I ordered I went to have a word with them and shared my concern re marking of wheels etc ( my OCD side was fully explained!!). They showed me all the equipment they would be using - reassured by nylon / plastic items that they would use. They also agreed for me to check wheels with them as they were fitting each one - so happy days everything went very well.
Just to let you know that I am still really happy with my choice of tyres too. No regrets at all.

Hi Emyr, Thanks for the info on the tyres. I haven’t got round to replacing mine yet but will defintely use Blackcircles and book my 993 into ATS in Denbigh as they will now know how to change the tyres without damaging the rims.

Hi, I'm new to Porsche ownership and the club (just joined) with a 2005 Boxster 987. Been told I need to have N rated tyres and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction with brands and deals. Tyres on the car are almost new but are only H6 rated whatever that means. I have been reading lots of threads on the whole N rated thing and decided I should go with what Porsche recommend but still want to have some money left in the bank.
Any advice gratefully received. I live in Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Now that is a can of worms you have opened Phil.
