718 Boxster GTS ordered today. How long to wait for a build slot and delivery?

After three brilliant years of ownership, decided I needed a change. So good-bye Targa, hello Boxster. Staying loyal to the manual box.

Due to the imminent early factory closure, no build slots available at the moment. It will be a MY19 build but won’t know for sometime, when the build slots will open up again. Looks like may be September 18.

Richard,

As Adrian has pointed, out I believe that production of European cars will be shut-down from April/May until September (after the annual shut-down).

It's something to do with a German government requirement to ensure that all engines meet the more representative Worldwide harmonised Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) emission test and Porsche have chosen to stop production while these tests are conducted.

I concur. This is the impact in VW group of diesel gate. They (VW) are attempting to gain the upper hand here after the disaster of Diesel gate. Time will tell of course. The immediate impact is unless you have a delivery this month or find stock at close to what you want at the OPC you will have to wait. How long right now, is unknown.

I note from some US web sites they are also adding in Mission E to the mix. I can imagine harmonising an electric car into the production of the existing hydro carbon cars will add a further management challenge.

So they have 6 months lost production Glad I am not a share holder

I don't see this as the issue that you seem to. It looks like Porsche have had to comply with new legislation, so no choice. And we have to expect them to accommodate the revised law in the most cost effective way that they can.

Thanks a good spot. Just come onto the market, was not around last weekend. I’m changing colour from my Red Targa this time...sadly a paddle version as well.

I was down at Porsche Silverstone (well Towcester [:)]) and they were quoting me October, but sounds like this could be a salesman's guess [:(]

On the plus side it seems that the dealer network is being filled with stock beforehand, although as usual a lot of it over speced...

It would be worth speaking to the dealers, I had the same conversation on wait time and MY19, however, decided to buy 1 of the 2 showroom models from Porsche Centre Solihull. When I went to confirm they had sold it, but 2 more had been delivered that morning, so pretty much bought mine straight of the transporter. 1 week turnaround and picked it up last Saturday. My first Porsche experience / purchase - what an amazing experience & car.

Thanks for this update. I’ve not spec'd in the traditional GTS way. If you have ever seen the Nick Murray YouTube videos quite similar to his 991.2 Carrera S. The order for stock cars coming through at the moment won’t be along this thinking, staying on the well trodden turf of alcantara and pdk.

I will find out later this month my build slot. I’ll then provide an update.

I now have an update from Uk Production @ Uk Hq at Reading. No manuals until Jan /Feb 19. I’m fine with this as have big tour planned in late April in France.

The car's manual suggests a running in period for the 718 of 1,865 miles (3,000km), so if you're one of these people who likes to adhere to these things (rather than listen to the salesmen, who have always told me that running in is not required) you should still have time to build up the miles before your French trip.

We were originally told "around the end of the year" for a GTS which when pressed the salesman said was hopefully a November or December build.

I got a call on Thursday offering me a build slot in November, but the spec had to be locked down the following day. However they couldn't tell me what was in the 2019 spec, nor the price, nor the full list of colours available they could only tell me that 3 colours had been dropped - Rhodium Silver, Sapphire Blue and Graphite Blue - one of which was our top choice

Of course I would probably have chosen another colour and gone for it, but the voice of reason that is my wife pointed out that another month wouldn't be an issue and that we really should have a better idea of just what we're going to be spending all that money on...

I have only just picked up the reply about the GTS Order potential from the post on 9 September.

I checked with my OPC to get their reaction.

Without giving too much away the OPC's are not able at moment to place any orders. It's all being handled by HQ at Reading in Planning and Production. They are loading up the specs and the cars direct into the factory order system. Hence why you got a load of duds as the answers to your questions. OPC's are blind like us at the moment, they just don't know.

I have just checked the Car Configurator on the 718 Boxster GTS, and the standard warning is still stating:-

"Due to an upcoming revision of specification, this model is not currently available for configuration as a new factory order. Please continue to use the Car Configurator to explore the model. For more information regarding availability please contact your preferred Porsche Centre."

The assumption was you were allotted a slot because somewhere, somebody dropped out and you were next in line. As you did not take it it will have either gone elsewhere or been lost.

The Sunday papers were full of motoring woes and having a weak September for sales for the month as a result of the dealers moving a lot of stock early in August to beat the new Emission rules effective from 1 September. In other words the number '68 plate sales will be poor this month.

Porsche have been caught out by all the cars in Germany having to be retested for the new rules and their simply are not enough testing facilities/slots to get all the cars made in Germany efficiently through the new regime in a timely manner. They can't move to another country to test to get around the delay. You have to test where made. This new regime is going to take a while to settle down. So placing an order now, and then see a build slot and then actually getting a car will take into 2019 to return to what was considered normal pre April 2018.

Porsche production won't be down for the year as they have been able due to high demand from RoW to drop Europe after giving it a big push in first four months of this year, and continue to build cars for territories where the new emission rules are not yet mandatory.

We recently changed our dog car and went with another Audi A6 Allroad. Audi sales team were pulling hair out over the new rules from 1 September.

I mate told at the weekend that Bentley are also all over the place on this. Go try and Order a Bentley.

It seems the VW scandal has caused quite a whirl-wind.....

Talk to Porsche about Right and Left hand HEADLIGHT version. You need to buy the conversion kit WITH the car or you will have to change the Light units if you want to go abroad Apparently a problem Cant believe they will not even take an order

Not sure what you mean by that - Porsche have had switchable headlights for years now, just alter it in the On Board Computer. Has something changed with lights specification?

The VWGroup had so many cars that they couldn't sell that they had to hire the entire new Berlin Brandenburg airport (not yet opened obviously...) to store them on, and they weren't the only German manufacturer to be badly caught out....

Bizarrely another manufacturer who's vehicles all pass the new regs had a terrible August because of all the non-compliant vehicles dumped on the market.

The 2019 specs are now up on the Porsche website with the reduced colour range (seems that someone in Stuttgart doesn't like blue colours - Saphire and Graphite have gone)

The basic price of a Boxster GTS has gone up by £691 to £61,727, but all the options still seem to be at the 2018 price.

It's currently not possible to order a manual so PDK is automatically checked as a £2,303 option.

Spoke to Porsche Silverstone this afternoon who are still "hoping" to get us a December build slot.

Oh, and the Emissions is now shown as 195g/km instead of 186 with the fuel consumption figures also worse, down to 24.6 mpg for the Urban from 25.9

I have checked the configuration today, if you want a manual car, it’s only a 718 S that’s currently available. Both the 2.0 litre 718 and the GTS are only PDK at the moment.
