Hi Guy's
Just wanted to get the feeling from the Porsche community that have driven cars with PDK on the track and what the preferred option is having mainly driven manuals before ie.

PDK in Auto, Sports, Sports Plus or Manual using Paddles on Track ?
regards

Pete

I would select Sports + and then be free to concentrate on your lines and exit speeds. [;)]

Totally agree with Clive, paddles in Sport + the car drives like you are in a video game.
Absolutley superb

Sport+ and manual for track, better to decide when to change rather than the shunt from the auto change catching you mid corner and unsettling the car under lateral load. Using manual means you can elect to change up or down when you want taking the balance and load on the car into account eg changing up slightly earlier on corner exit or changing down slightly later into the apex to avoid unsettling car in the maximum braking phase

I would say paddles for everything, the only exception is if you're in loads of traffic or "off-duty" so to speak stick it in auto and even normal mode or whatever it's called (I don't use it).
Sport for road and Sport+ for track, makes sense to me.

As a track day newbie I have used sports + and sport modes but not the paddles. As Clive said earlier in the post, it allows me to concentrate on the lines and exit speeds from corners. But each to his own - whatever you feel most comfortable with.

Absolutely correct, just be prepared for the quite pronounced surge during the lossless torque gear change if the conditions are not optimal on the day as in Sport+ the stability mgt is quite hands off!

What do you chaps think about the power and torque curves and using sport+ in "auto"? Am I right in thinking, especially on the turbo, there's little point in going much above 5000rpm where the torque falls off noticeably? I think that's around 6500 in the n/a cars.
Also, did you know that even in "manual" mode it will upshift at the redline if you are on the kick down button? If not it will bounce off the rev limiter.

Generally speaking, you are faster moving forward in a higher gear, rather than revving the nuts off the motor in low gear. [;)]

Some drivers prefer the latter of course, as it sounds faster and flatters the ego! :ROFLMAO:

Clive

I found that in my Porsche and the current car the fastest way on track was sports and left in automatic.
However the paddles added a lot more fun and connection to the overall event and where I usually found myself after the first hour.

On road, I usually go auto but find the switchbacks can sometimes fool the car, so a quick click down a gear has it sorted. [:)]

Definitely a big difference between my NA C4S and Turbo from a need to rev perspective so probably more reason if in Sport+ to use paddles if in a turbo

I would agree with that. Somewhere in the 2-5k rev range is all you need in the turbo with it's flat torque curve.

I cant speak for the turbo's but on a NA car with PDK in Sport+, it only changes up automatically on the redline, the PSM will suppress changes mid corner if it detects that the up change would cause instability.
Its rare to need to use the paddles at the track in the dry in Sport+, if the PDK gets it wrong its usually because your line could be improved.
I only tend to use the paddles in the wet.
