Advice for first time Boxster owner

Andy Sapir

New member
I have just purchased my first Porsche (a 2010 plate Boxster 987 Gen 2 2.9 PDK) and loving it. Apart from the usual regular maintenance (tyre pressure, oil/water yadda yadda) does anyone have any sage advice about keeping it mechanically in tip-top shape?
Any advice will be very welcome.
Thanks,
Andy

Andy,

Maybe worth your while to check the condition of the air filter element. Have a replacement air filter at hand when you do.

I would be surprised if it has been replaced recently in your car.

Brian

Welcome Andy. Same as mine except mine's a manual.
No mechanical advice, the 2nd gen seem pretty bullet proof.
Worth looking after the hood, though.
At the risk of teaching my grandmother etc. I'd consider Renovo soft top reviver in the appropriate colour, then a couple of coats of
GRANGERS FABSIL UV PROTECTION[/h1]I did this Feb 2017 and it's still beading nicely.

I also had mine machine polished, then carnouba wax. Only wash in plain water. Top wax up every 4 months or so.

Enjoy your drive

Cheers...and how do I do that?
Andy,

Check-out the technical articles on this site, or on the Cayman Owners Club, for your 987 Boxster air filter replacement.

It's an easy enough DIY job. Takes about an hour and a half tops.

A couple of things. Make sure the drain holes front and back are kept clear. The front ones are either side of the battery and the rear can be seen with the hood half up

Secondly regularly clean out the crud that collects against the air con condensers in the big scoops in the bumper. They cause the roads to rot (just changed mine at 13 years). Son found a dead bird in his Boxster bumper!

I also change the oil and filter on mine every year, although this is a 2 year schedule I hate the fact that the oil and filter is in there for 2 years. Porsche also recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years. If you have a comprehensive history with the car all that should be at hand. Personally I would never buy a Boxster without it (or any car for that matter) unless there was plenty wedge knocked off the asking price.

can anybody offer advice for caring for your Boxster. Mainenance packages and warrentys etc. Looking to purchase .

If you find a potential car you want to purchase look for a full service history .
Also get a pre purchase check done either Opc or a good Porsche independent.
Keep up with the service history and any consumables that are needed.
If purchasing from Porsche you will get a 2 year warranty anyway.

And also bare in mind OPC are not really up for fitting your own supplies parts even if they are genuine Porsche. Well mine wouldn’t anyway and it was just a clutch pedal micro switch

Hello Andy, nice car, mine is a 987.2 / 2.9 manual trans, been mine for 2 years, great car.

Along the way I have found the weak spots to watch or repair and I list my findings below. I would try to find a good indie or stick with OPC for work.
People on here will help with the Indie if you say where you are.
Points to check:
A/C rads, check ac works, if not be ready for the 2 rads to be replaced. The rotting leaves warnings above are dead true. Invest in grill guards. Mine lasted 9 years.
Check or replace soon the exhaust system bolts that corrode and the system starts to blow. Pig of a job without the right tools/facilities. Mine getting done next week.
Watch for rusting front discs, inner faces. Nothing seems to stop this occurring, MoT man may fail the car. Finding out very soon on my car!
Clean out those drains as said above, lots of YouTube instructions. Mine were clear when I checked, but essential to check. Takes 15 mins when you know how.
Use good fuel, Shell is good with a high octane rating.

TBH that is about it!

Keep every scrap of paper/evidence of work carried out for the day you sell in a nice folder with all the MoT's etc.

I think the cars are far better running if driven with a bit of focus regularly, hard where I live, but stretch it's legs out good and proper...and plan lots of long trips and tell us about them!
With pictures!!

Hi Andy,

you've bought the same thing as me about a year later [:)]
though not my first one. anyway, maintenance is key, and watch salty roads (wash after)
routine checks would be drain holes as mentioned below, tyre pressures, oil check regularly, and as you get used to it you'll know how it sounds and breathes, and when things are maybe not right, you'll probably hear it before anything else.

A lot of Opcs let you use your own oil if it's Mobil 1 and the correct grade .
Parts is a step to far I think.

Hi guys i'm new here just bought a January 2007 Boxster S only had it a few days & I love it.

Have a lot of history with the car the front radiators have been replaced as well as the A.C radiator as previous owner tells me he fell foul of the leaves rotting behind the bumper, also has had the bolts changed on the exhaust as they had corroded which again I notice is an issue. So I'm hoping most of the potential big jobs are done but is there anything else specific I should look out for ?
Many Thanks
