Hi again.
Been looking through my drivers book and it makes no mention of the PSE functionality. Mine has the button and am wondering is it louder with button lit up or quieter.

cant seem to to find anything on the subject.

It should be louder when illuminated....unless the switch has been reversed. Either way if it’s working correctly you will know...

When you start up the valve in the exhaust is open and loud, it then closes and you have to switch it on ( light on ) it then turns of by itself at approx 35mph and remains off until approx 45mph without you touching anything but you should be able to hear the change, then if your on the motorway at 70mph if you switch it on off and then on again you will certainly hear the change in tone.

Ello.
When the light is on, the cars quieter as lower speeds. The valves in the system open at about 4000rpm, but it's also dependant on throttle position. Accelerating gently won't make any difference, but press halfway down or more and there's a change in note as the valves open - keep your foot in and the noise just before changing up at 7000rpm is to die for :D

While all the comments above are correct, it is easy when sitting at tickover to open the door and press the button you will hear the valves moving and the exhaust note will deepen and get slightly louder if they are opening

ok I see. When I first start the car it's sounds loud then seems to get quieter. The light is illuminated on the exhaust button which means the valves will open above a certain rev range. So light off will put it back to quiet?

Yes when the car first starts the valves are open then the vacuum closes them thats why the car quietens. When you start the car the light on the button should be off and you can turn it on. In summary, light on noisy, light off quieter!

Dont think it is quite as simple as the valves stay closed to x revs. They are definitely open at tickover and I think (may be wrong) throttle input and revs are monitored to vary the vacuum and open / close the flaps when certain preset conditions are met. This is why alot of people disconnect the vacuum line to have permanent open flaps, although it is recommended you connect the hoses every so often so the flaps dont stick

If you cant something is wrong! To be sure get someone to sit in car when ticking over and you stand behind car you will clearly hear the flaps and note will change

Just found this on piston heads now am confused. Will have a play see what happens.

997.1 had two versions of sports exhaust; depending on model year
Model year '05:
The diode in the "Sport” button lights up: sports exhaust system is active.
The diode in the "Double tailpipe” button lights up: sports exhaust system is not active.
The diode also flashes in the "Double tailpipe” button to indicate the regulating status of the flaps in the rear silencers.

From model year '06:
The diode in the "Sport” (I-no. 639/640) and "Double tailpipe” buttons lights up: sports exhaust system is active.

Mine has just come back from a major service and the engineer said my exhaust defaults to light on loud which is not normal and thought it may have been pre set in the ECM.

Oh oh well it works so all good. ??
