It's a while away yet, but I hope you can commit and put this in your diaries now. Join me and other R10 members on Thursday 12th July 2018 for evening gliding at Dunstable Downs – available to the first 24 members (with one guest only) who reply and return their booking forms to me.

For just 27.50 per person, you will be launched from a ground winch to about 1000 feet, spending the next few minutes passing over roads you've never seen before, and really appreciate how the countryside starts at the Dunstable Downs.

For £60.00 per person, if there are enough people to merit it, a tow plane will take you up to 2000 feet.

The entire group must arrive at the meeting point by 6pm promptly to receive the safety briefing – without this, you will not be able to fly!!

Imagine cruising through the sky, turning and climbing, and leaving the world behind. Imagine escaping from the bustle on the ground, being free of the congestion, noise and heat. You can see for miles. Your head is perfectly positioned to take in the view, and there are no pillars or posts to obscure it.
Your experienced instructor will teach you the basics of flying gliders. This will certainly include turning, and if the weather is right this turn will probably be in rising air, or a thermal. You may be able to take the controls. Then there will be a gentle downhill glide to the smoothest landing of your life.

Following the flying session, we have the option of eating for reasonable additional cost in the Club’s restaurant, or we can adjourn to a different venue. Between now and the date of the event, I will check out the facilities on offer at the Club, to ensure they meet our exacting standards!!

Please find attached the London Gliding Club’s flyer. For further information visit www.londonglidingclub.co.uk.

As ever, please use only this thread to indicate your attendance or to request further information. I will then email you a temporary membership application form and instructions for its return to me. Due to the expected popularity of this event, you will only be added to the attendance list once I have received your properly completed application.

Happy flying!
Mark

Hello everyone,

I would like to remind you about this event, because I will be away for a while shortly and want to ensure you don't forget about it in my absence! It seems a long way off now, but I hope you will be able to decide sooner rather than later.

Thanks.

Mark

G'day everyone,

I am back from my holiday in Oz, and can't wait to get back in a Porsche!

The Gliding Event on July 12th is coming round quickly, so please let me know if you will be coming... places are limited to 24 fliers.

Manuel's POTM is two weeks after this, so if you want a great non-flying evening out without overloading your diary, come along and just watch (but book in here with me so I can keep an eye on food numbers).

In the next week or so, I will check out the Gliding Club's food offering and prices, and/or consider pubs in the area for our post-event meal.

Hi all,

Unfortunatelay at the moment, I don’t have enough of a take up on this to make it a worthwhile event. So if you are holding back from making a decision, please don’t wait any longer. If numbers don’t increase to an acceptable level by next Monday, I will have no option but to cancel. That would be a shame for the few that have put their names down.

Thanks.

Mark

Sorry to those that have signed up, but we have not reached the minimum number to make this a worthwhile event, so I have had to give the Gliding Club notice that the evening will not be going ahead.

If you have a moment, it would be helpful in the planning of future social events if you could let me know on this thread why this one didn't "float your boat". There have been in excess of 340 hits to the original post, so the title seemed to grab members' interest at least......

Many thanks.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Really sorry to hear this, I know how much effort goes into these events.

Feedback wise I wasn't able to make it as the kick off was too early for me to be able to get over from work. If I'm honest this is the reason I've struggled to get to a lot of the mid week events. It would definitely work better for me if these were a little later in the evening.

Maybe we could take a vote at the monthly meeting to see what times work best for people?

Regards

M

Hi Mark,

Thanks very much for your support and for the feedback. I suspect several others had the same reasons for not being able to make it ... as you know it’s getting the balance right. So many weekends are taken up with other events and peoples’ family lives, and in choosing a weekday, this one had to start early so there was enough flying time in daylight. The club insisted on a single safety briefing so there was no scope for staggering arrivals. Let’s see what others have to say, and I might make it work another day, because it’s something different and a nice drive out. Cheers.
