The Supercar Event – Drive your Porsche at Rockingham Circuit? – 7th-8th July 2018

Last meeting I floated this as a possible annual R10 event in terms of us taking a significant sized display area to congregate and show off our cars to the public, and also drive our cars on the Rockingham Oval Circuit (if approved). With all monies raised going to the Children’s Trust charity, this would involve us in driving our Porsches free of charge (i.e. we get no fuel or other expense reimbursement), on a couple of laps (many times), each time with a passenger from the general public. The public pays £30 to £100 to the charity depending on the car type, for the pleasure of the ride.

Originally Ferrari only, now up to 300 Supercars of different marques are made available by their owners over the weekend. I understand drivers commit to just one, or to both days. The event has been successfully run for 10+ years at the "Top Gear circuit” in Surrey, which it has outgrown – hence the move this year to Rockingham, with more space, and where the event can continue to grow.

I have spoken to the organisers – they expect to lose some Supercars due to the change of location. They will probably want more but will be selective. However, at this stage, any Porsche will be considered because of the public’s appetite for a variety of cars and the lengthy queues for a ride. The selection process will include a personal interview because they will only take on careful, experienced drivers.

I would add that this is a highly regulated and safety orientated event – their internal risk assessment runs to 120 pages.

If we enter as a club, with enough Porsches for a dedicated display area, we will qualify for discounted entry tickets. We can then put up a marquee as our focal and gathering point, set up a BBQ etc, and generally enjoy some social time. It’s a family day out, with other attractions including helicopter rides, Caterham 7 rides, a Stay Safe Driving School for teens, food and drink outlets and a picnic area.

So, it’s over to you – is this something you would support? – it will need a good turnout to make it worth putting time into organizing, and to getting a good deal from the organisers. If it proves to be a runner, we could extend an invitation to other PCGB regions, as long as we satisfy our own requirements first.

As ever, please let me have your commitment via this thread only. Any additional comments would be welcome.

Thanks.
Mark

PS. It’s a very busy motorsport weekend including the British F1 Grand Prix, Le Mans Classic and Chateau Impney Hill Climb. The organisers had no choice this year, but will seek to avoid this in future years.

Driving when accompanied by paying passengers may have insurance implications, so it would worth checking with insurers beforehand; also presumably the public will be asked to sign a relevant indemnity.

Clive

Thanks for the link John.

And Clive, good point about insurance - I have left a query with my own insurers, and will report back as to how I will be affected personally.

But I will not be giving insurance advice to anyone. It will be essential for each person hoping to participate to check for themselves with their own insurers.

Thanks again.
Mark

My insurers have advised me that as money is being taken by the charity for my car to be used on the track, the car will be used "for hire or reward" and as such, I will not be covered in the event of a claim./
