Upgraded Exhaust

Hi Ladies and Gents,

Has anyone upgraded their standard 987.1 Exhaust to a full OE Porsche Sports Switchable system by any chance who is able to give indications of cost and benefits please?

Thanks in advance.

Regards Neil

not worth it on the gen 1, all the cats on in the back section which robs the car of power, just fit a cheap Remus back box or some thing.

I retro fitted the Porsche Sport Exhaust on my 2007 987.1 Cayman 2.7 manual. It was fitted by my local OPC in a day, and was a straight forward and trouble free modification. From memory, I think it cost me £1250 fitted.

The 2.7 engine sounded better afterwards, and at the time the switchable facility was fun. For an ageing boy racer anyway. The PSE kit also included the OE console switch as per factory installation. At the same time, I also fitted myself, a K&N cotton air filter. The combined result didn't make any tangible difference to performance, that I could detect. I looked upon this more as an optimisation modification. It helped the negotiations a bit when I traded-in the car. At that time not many Cayman 2.7's had the PSE option.

As David has said on the previous post, if you want a more noticeable power gain, fit an aftermarket performance exhaust from a reputable supplier.

May not be what you had in mind, but quite a few of us rate Carnewal's offering (and circa half the cost of the Design Tek)....not a system you need to turn on or off , something you can easily live with whether pootling around town, or doing the exact opposite!

Geoff997, Has he got the switchable system? That's the system I mentioned above which is reasonable when turned down!

Craiglm68 The Carnewal is a definite option for me but the posting faf is a consideration if I'm honest.

Fair comment, though it was actually quite straight forward re posting ......you only have to sort a courier to collect it from whatever workshop is used (easy done online, cost me about £23 for a courier to collect and return to Belgium), so long as whoever fits its doesn't damage the original, it will go into the box Gert sent it over in

Agree with Craiglm68 - I had one of Gerts exhaust fitted last year - the drive to Belgium is fantastic and very easy - Gert fits the exhaust while you wait and you drive away with a lovely sounding exhaust. Its worth consideration - or just contact Gert and ask the question - he will give you the info you require.

Cheers guys.

The Postal issue I will look into as expected it to be considerably more costly and a bigger faf to be honest!

The drive to Gerts isn't an option as I don't intend going to Europe any time soon so would be a costly option.

ill be using Revolution Porsche at Brighouse as I trust them with the job and have always been outstanding with service!

Comments have made interesting reading. I have just had my 981 exhaust replaced at my local PC with the OE retrofit switchable Sports exhaust. I am delighted with the improved sound. In normal setting it is a little louder in the cabin but acceptable. When switched on the sound at high revs is fabulous. I am lucky in having a two mile plus straight road nearby with minimal traffic. I used this to reep the full aural benefit. I set the PDK to manual, engaged 2nd, and used full power changes near max revs. The instantaneous shifts were accompanied by wonderful loud pops. The reverse process produced throttle blips again with loud pops and crackle. Takes the sound, at least, into GT3/4 territory. All schoolboy stuff but very exhilerating. It will definitely enhance track day pleasure. So far, I have had no complaints from my neighbours but it is early days!

As to the Sport button, this changes the mapping to delay gear changes and improve liveliness. Not sure about sound enhancement other than that available at higher revs.

Having greatly enjoyed ten years of 993 ownership I have to say that the 981 has a stunning chassis.

Just a newbie to the world of Porsche after 49 years of waiting for one . At last I have one resting in my garage and I love it . It has turned me into a big kid again. Just reading all the comments on here and was wondering if anyone close to the Yeovil Taunton area has had a boxster 987 S with the carnewal exhaust upgrade. My car sounds lovely but isn’t loud enough for the big kid in me. When I bought it the dealer thought the exhaust may have have been modified at some point as it sounded so nice but I’m not so sure and would love the opportunity to compare it against the Carnewal GT system before I jump in and buy. Can anyone on here help?

Everyone to their own. Don't think it would suit me on my daily runner. Great sound but preferred on the track.

Top Gear Exhausts have a good reputation for both quality and sound. May be worth a look.

Cheers Ray. I know what your saying regarding everyday use but mine is just a weekend toy to help put the smile back on my face after a hard weeks graft. Am thinking the extra decibels wil leave me grinning from ear to ear.

Should anyone elect to retrofit Porsche Sports Exhaust System it will be as well to check out the function of all buttons on completion. By chance my MOT fell due immediately after my upgrade. The car was failed because the Traction Control button did not work. Investigation revealed that the new Sports Exhaust button had taken its place in the computer memory. Recoding of the Traction Control button resolved the problem. My good luck was the timing of the MOT. Otherwise I would have not known of the issue for somewhile.

I have the switchable PSE on my gen2 and it has a nice tone to me when driving and as a friend told me when I arrived at a regional meeting one evening they could here me coming about half a mile away! If you fancy the Carnewal mod why not take a trip to Belgium and have it done while there? Others have done just that and then you can enjoy a driving holiday to get used to it.

Well I bit the bullet and have gone for the Carnewal gt system. i wish I could have gone to Gert and had it fitted but sadly I work 6 days a week so could only get ther on a sunday so no go. Instead I went and ordered it delivered for the swap. Just fitted this weekend in my garage whilst on the axle stands it took about three hours most of which was getting the old corroded bolts off!!!!!. Glad I opted for Gerts fitting pack which had all new stainless bolts etc. I’m very lucky to have a mate who is blooming clever with His hands and has fitted scores of exhausts in his time and knew exactly how to go about it he didn’t let anything phase him even though he had to do it lying on his back .i have to say even on first start up WOW!!!!! and apparently it will get better once I’ve driven around 60 miles or more. I was tempted with the pse and also looked at the car graphic system but both were a bit rich for my pocket and TBH I reckon I would have always driven with the valves open and radio offf anyway.
