2005 Boxster 987S overheated and lost a lot of coolant.

After allowing my car to idle for a while I took it for a spin and as I set of I smelt the coolant. As soon as I was underway the smell faded. After about 6 miles the temperature shot up to the max. A warning message beeped warning of that. I stopped and clearly there was a problem of coolant loss with a pool forming under the car. I let it cool down, topped up the coolant and continued my journey. The heater doesn't put out warm air now. I cant see the coolant escaping now but suspect that all is not well. I will get access to the engine when possible but in the meantime I wondered if this problem has happened to others and what might be the cause. Thanks in anticipation.

If the coolant loss was in front offside rear wheel it could be the coolant cap(happened to me ) or the expansion tank. Heater not working might be due to an air lock .
Hope its nothing more serious .
