Insurance claims: vandalism or theft

Just wondered if members have experience of vandalism or theft of their Porsche/s. Are they more of a target than other sports cars?

Many moons ago during the working week, I used to park my 911 in a town centre park alongside a senior local solicitor who drove a Roller.

Over a number of years, I lost only a bonnet shield once, whereas the Rolls suffered a number of keying incidents and was repeatedly in the paint shop - disgruntled clients or resentful inadequates I know not, but interestingly the Porsche was left largely unmolested. [;)]
Regards,

Clive

I agonised over whether to buy my first 911 in 1983 as it would be my only set of wheels and I would have to park it in front of my surgery in Edmonton, London. I have had a succession of various 911s and have never experienced any vandalism right up to my retirement in 2015. The only damage was a broken window and stolen "brick" type phone back in about 1987 which was entirely my fault as I had left the phone in the car cradle at an underground station.
The only occasional damage were the occasional dings caused by careless parkers. In later years at my practice when I had the luxury of second cars often if I had not my Porsche that day patients would not infrequently ask if I had sold that lovely car. Never had any derogatory comments from any patients about my Porsches.

The only time I've had a problem in central London is when I first arrived home a couple of years ago in my first ever Porsche - a Boxster. A hot hatch with blacked out windows pulled up alongside, window wound down and the driver spat at my car. Nice! My 911 is now tucked away in a secure car park and I own another car as the family workhorse. That sits outside in all weather and has only had a mild keying once.

I suspect Porsches are seen as a little more low key nowadays, compared with the more exotic vehicles out there, and certainly compared with their yuppy image in the '80s. I've met Ferrari and Lamborghini owners who has suffered from vandalism.

When it comes to insurance claims, the insurer will have all the claim figures and calculate the premium based on vulnerability to vandalism or theft. If the car is more of a target, the premiums will be prohibitively high: witness the price of insuring a Cosworth in the late '80s!

What's more of an issue is the low-level damage, that you wouldn't claim on. With the excess and no-claims at risk, I think a lot of people wouldn't declare quite substantial damage now, and I wonder if an increasing number of smaller accidents go unreported?

I think you're right about not claiming for minor - and increasingly not so minor - damage. I recently learned an expensive lesson in when not to make a claim. I have a run-of-the-mill estate car which I use as the family workhorse, while the 997.2 turbo is tucked away somewhere safe. The workhorse received a relatively minor keying last year whilst parked outside. Being someone who likes a car to look clean and tidy I decided to make my first ever insurance claim in order to get it sorted out. The work was carried out to a fairly decent standard and I thought nothing more about it.

However, recently, I've started to think about renewing my Porsche insurance for the year. I recently phoned one of the specialist companies for a quote and was asked if I'd made any claims in the last year. On my Porsche insurance (currently with Locktons) I've made no claims at all but I did 'fess up and say that I'd made a claim on my daily driver (insured with one of the high street companies). I was quoted an horrendous premium and was told the high price was due to my claim last year for the vandalism on the daily driver. The quote I was given was around ÂŁ1500 per annum - approximately ÂŁ600 more than I'm currently paying with Locktons. I now wish I'd paid for the key scratch with my own money. The amount it seems to be adding to my Porsche insurance simply isn't worth it.

Sorry to hear of your experience, Simon, but thanks for sharing. I hope that you can find a quote for less than ÂŁ1,500.

Cheers,

Simon

Not wishing to tempt fate, but I've driven various Porsches over the last 2 years (Macan, 991.1 C2, Panamera 4 and various Porsche loan cars & demonstrators) and touch wood, have had no problems so far. Only the occasional compliment at a petrol station. [:)]

The only vandalism that I can recall was about 25 years ago when the driver's window of my Golf GTi was smashed when the car was parked in a side street in Ramsgate. They may have pinched the radio, but can't recall!

Hopefully my incoming Racing Yellow Carrera T will not attract unwanted attention! [8|]

As many others here, my 911 is tucked away in the garage underneath a cover and I schlep about in a daily driver (Golf currently, soon to be a Volvo... god I'm old...) however my first 911 was my daily. Back in the very early 90's I had a turbo bodied G-model and that was vandalised twice.
Once it had the deepest keying (about 9" long) I, and the guy that repaired it for me, had ever known. Must have been done with real venom and I suspected it was a disgruntled neighbour as the car was very very loud.
The other time the wipers were 'mangled' by a passing mob of rugby club oiks (Bath.. "my own club"). Both times I didn't claim on insurance due to my age and the expectation of even more huge premiums. Other cars I've had have been victims too, but I've never claimed.

Thankfully Locktons came back to me earlier today and said that the claim on the daily driver wouldn't affect the premium. Looks like I'll be sticking with them again. They weren't even concerned about the recently fitted Sharkwerks exhaust either. Very impressed.

Good news. [:)]

I've heard good things about Sharkwerks exhausts! [:D]

It's a great bit of kit. Well priced and gives the turbo a much more pleasant exhaust note - not dissimilar to the PSE.

And let us know how you get on with the new T. I've been glued to all the reviews over the last few weeks. I'd love to know your thoughts.

Will do! The latest estimated date for build completion was March 20th, so hoping to collect it in early April! Can't wait! And mine has PSE, so not thinking of 'upgrading' to Sharkwerks just yet, although know of someone who's fitting a system of theirs to a brand new GT3! [8D]

This is where Moderators need to compromise, obviously as the post has embraced various sub posts.[:D]

Here endeth the second lesson[&o]
